Course Assignments
  • Complete an occupational profile and apply the
    OPPM to address a personal semester goal
  • Use the APA style manual and the portfolio
    guidelines to correct an inaccurately written
    literature review and reference list.
  • Read and analyze a selection written by an author
    in a reflective style. Use this piece as an
    example to write up a personal experience using
    the Guidelines for the Written Portfolio.
  • Develop and present a power point presentation of
    assignment 3.

Grading Criteria
  • Each project is worth 100
  • Course is graded on a pass/fail basis
  • Passing 350-500 pts
  • Failing below 350 pts
  • Students scoring below 70 on the oral
    presentation will be required to take
    communications course offered through the
    graduate school

Overview of the Portfolio Process

Purpose of the Portfolio
  • Serves as the capstone project for completion of
    the masters degree in lieu of a thesis
  • Designed to enable the student to explore various
    aspects of occupational therapy and develop
    strategies to pursue life long learning in the
    field.
  • Also the method by which the student demonstrates
    that he/she is prepared to practice the art and
    science of occupational therapy in a variety of
    environmental contexts with consumers who have
    various limitations in occupational performance

Department Philosophy
  • Faculty in the OT department believe that
    graduates of this program must be well rounded
    individuals capable of contributing equally to
    their consumers and stakeholders their community
    and their profession.
  • To achieve this, a student must demonstrate four
    key attributes
  • Commitment to life long learning
  • Commitment to community service
  • Commitment to advocacy and leadership
  • Commitment to excellence in clinical practice

Requirements
  • With advisors guidance and consent select and
    complete a minimum of four projects.
  • Must select at least one project to address each
    of the four attributes
  • Selection of the projects is a personal decision
    and should reflect interests in the field of
    occupational therapy
  • May choose to focus on one population or
    treatment intervention or explore several
    different aspects of practice

The Contract
  • Once the projects are selected, the student
    completes a written contract with the advisor.
  • The contract details the projects to be
    completed and establishes a timeframe for
    completion.
  • Serves as an agreement between the advisor and
    student for completion of the portfolio
  • Must be completed by the end of summer semester
    of the first year.

Written Presentation
  • Spring semester second year the student completes
    a written presentation of the projects following
    the departmental guidelines
  • A literature review must be included in the
    written presentation.
  • The written portfolio is graded by the advisor
    with input from the second faculty reader.
  • The second reader is selected by the student in
    the preceding semester
  • Once completed and approved, CD copy of the
    presentation is placed in the students
    departmental file.

Oral Presentation
  • Following completion of the written portfolio,
    the student prepares an oral power point
    presentation of the portfolio projects
  • The oral presentation is open to all members of
    the academic community and the community at
    large.
  • Generally it is given to OT faculty, students,
    and guests (often family members and significant
    others who have suffered with you the past two
    years)
  • The oral presentation is graded by the advisor
    and the second reader.

Timeframes
  • Fall and spring semesters of first year
  • Decide portfolio projects
  • Summer semester of first year
  • Develop and sign contract
  • Fall semester of second year
  • Complete projects and begin writing them up
  • Note projects can be started any time after the
    first semester
  • Spring semester of second year
  • Complete the written and oral presentations

Grading Criteria
  • The six credits of the portfolio process are
    graded pass/fail
  • Each semester has specific criteria
  • Final grades for the written and oral
    presentation are assigned by the advisor with
    input from the second reader
  • Three grades are given written, oral
    presentation and discussant
