  • Feasibility Study
  • The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1938 was the
    first serious attempt to develop a national
    roadway system.
  • Toll-financed system of three east-west and
    three north-south superhighways.
  • System could not be self-supporting advocated a
    26,700-mile network instead.

  • Expanded the network to 40,000 miles
  • Slow progress due to no specific authorized
    funds

    funding of the interstate system
  • Authorized 175 million
  • Two years later, the expanded 1956 Federal-Aid
