- 1938 Bureau of Public Works
- Feasibility Study
- The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1938 was the
first serious attempt to develop a national
roadway system. - Toll-financed system of three east-west and
three north-south superhighways. - System could not be self-supporting advocated a
26,700-mile network instead.

- Chartered National System of Interstate
Highways - Expanded the network to 40,000 miles
- Slow progress due to no specific authorized
funds

- President Eisenhower authorized the first
funding of the interstate system - Authorized 175 million
- Two years later, the expanded 1956 Federal-Aid
Highway Act authorized 25 billion
