OSAP 101

    ns

The sooner you apply, the better!
3
1. Dont bite the hand that feeds you
  • Dont lie to OSAP.
  • Penalties range from holding back future loans
to cutting you off from OSAP for 5 years.

4
2. OSAP is a year-long affair, NOT
just a one day event
  • During the year, always tell OSAP any changes to
your financial/academic life, if you move, etc.
  • The assessment (ie amount of OSAP is going to
lend you) that you receive at the beginning of
the year can change if your situation changes.

5
3 OSAP is distributed twice a year
  • September 60 of your loan/grant.
  • Check the Document Tracker, then bring your SIN
card photo ID to Financial Services to pick it
    up.
  • Then take it for processing to the NSLC rep in
the hall (1st two weeks of school) or a Canada
Post (DO NOT mail it anywhere!). You may need
your bank account info bring it with you.
  • January the rest of your loan/grant.
  • If there are no problems, it will be mailed to
    you over the break.
  • If you are receiving a grant, come to pick it up
    at our office.
  • If your 2nd instalment doesnt arrive, come see
    us.

6
4 Know the players
  • The OSAP head office is in Thunder Bay but they
    dont deal with students directly.
  • Staff at Glendon (and York) help administer OSAP
(once you submit your application, you deal with
    us).
  • The National Student Loan Center
  • (NSLC) think of them as the OSAP bank
actually puts your money in your bank account

7
5. We need your I.D.
  • Always have your social insurance card and photo
ID (i.e. drivers license, passport,) available
when asking OSAP related questions and especially
when you are picking up loan documents. YU Cards
can not be shown as ID for OSAP
  • NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • No SIN card photo ID NO OSAP

8
6. Access 24/7 online
  • We are always happy to see you, but you can
access most of your osap information online at
    http//osap.gov.on.ca
  • Please note that with Freedom of Information
legislation we cannot discuss your OSAP with
anyone (including your parents) unless you gave
    us permission on your application.
  • We cant talk about specifics over the telephone.
Come see us in person with ID.

9
7. York and OSAP do not run on the same computer
systems
  • The OSAP website and the York website are two
different sites so if you move and need to update
your address, you have to do it on the York
website AND on the OSAP website.

10
8. OSAP is fussy
  • On every document you submit, you must put
  • your social insurance number,
  • your name
  • the date
  • your signature.

11
9. OSAP is sloooooooooow
  • OSAP is a slow process. About 10,000 students at
    York benefit from OSAP.
  • It can take 4 - 6 weeks to make a change to your
    file.
  • Hand in your forms on time and prepare
    to be patient

12
10. OSAP is NOT forgiving
  • If OSAP asks for a form to be handed in by a
certain date and you are late handing it in, OSAP
will not make any exceptions and accept it.
  • Always return correspondence promptly so we can
help you get your loans quickly.

13
Most common OSAP problems
  • Wrong course load
  • Wrong income
  • Supporting documents not sent in
  • Signature on loan does not match SIN card
  • Lost documents

14
Dont forget the SFP!
  • Since you applied for OSAP, you could be eligible
for FREE MONEY (aka bursaries) from York and the
    Friends of Glendon
  • Fill out your Student Financial Profile online
