Title: Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
1Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
- Parent Presentation and Discussion
- on Internet Safety and Awareness
February 28, 2008
2Our Purposes are . . .
- To share with parents where PVMS West is in our
learning process regarding Internet safety. We
are all learning together in terms of Internet
safety and marketing on the web. - To share resources with parents regarding
Internet safety. - To initiate a discussion with parents with the
goal of creating a list of questions and concerns
that can be shared with PVSD.
3Why this is an issue at West
- We have experiences in the past several years
involving some of our students (both in and out
of school) that have made the issue of Internet
safety increasingly important. Examples include - Cyber bullying incidents on sites like Face Book
and My Space as well as student created sites. - Chat room issues.
4What we know http//www.isafe.org
- 71 of teens (ages 13-17) reported receiving
messages online from someone they do not know. - 40 reported that they will usually reply and
chat with that person. - 18 said that they would tell and adult.
- 45 of teens (ages 13-17) have been asked for
personal information by someone that they do not
know.
5What we know
- 30 of teens (ages 13-17) surveyed have
considered meeting someone that they have only
talked to online. - 14 have actually had such an encounter.
- 25 of youths (ages 10-17) have been exposed to
sexually explicit pictures without seeking or
expecting them (ex White House research). - 1in 5 youths (ages 10-17) have received unwanted
sexual solicitations online.
6What we know
- 1 in 17 youths (ages 10 to 17) have been
threatened or harassed online. - Only about half of those children reported this
incident to their parents. - Most children do not inform their parents when
they face a difficult situation online such as
being contacted by someone they do not know
(embarrassment and fear of loss of privileges).
7What we know
- 31 of students feel it is easier to talk to
people on the Internet than in real life. - 39 of students report that they trust people
that they meet online. - 24 of students report that they see nothing
wrong with chatting with a stranger online. - 9.5 of students have been asked to keep their
Internet relationship a secret.
8What We Know General Parent Level of Knowledge
- 30 of parents allow teenagers to use their
computer in private areas of the house. - 33 of 13 to 17 year olds reported that their
parents know very little or nothing about
what they do on the Internet. - 42 of parents do not review the content of what
their teenagers read or write in chat rooms or
instant messaging.
9What we know General Parent Level of Knowledge
- 95 of parents could not identify common chat
room lingo that teenagers use to warn people that
they are chatting with their parents watching
(POS P911). - 51 of parents do not have or do not know if they
have software on their computer to monitor where
their children go online.
10Parent Tips
- Always keep your childs computer in a common
area of the house. - Communicate with your child about the Internet.
- Become a part of your childs online experience
(sit with them). - Regularly review your computer files.
- Teach you child responsible use of online
resources.
11Tips
- Talk to your child about online dangers.
- Educate yourself on the ins and outs on the
Internet. - Talk to other parents about your experience.
- Let your child know that responsible adults do
not pursue relationships with minors.
12Tips
- If a cyber-bully has posted embarrassing photos
and personal information about your child on a
website, contact your Internet service provider
for assistance, website hosting the page or local
law enforcement. - If the cyber-bully is someone your child knows
from school, seek the assistance of school
officials. - Make use of the block or ban feature to block the
cyber-bully screen name or email address so that
messages cannot reach your child.
13Tips
- Tell you child not to respond to rude and
harassing emails, messages, and postings. - If your child continues to receive harassing
emails, have them delete their current account
and open a new one. - Save the evidence in case you need proof.
14Internet Marketing Research and its
ImplicationsDr. Joseph TurowAnnenburg School
for Communication at the University of
Pennsylvania
15Marketing
- Direct response, product placement, and
image/display are coming together in an online
and offline industrial logic focused on the
niche, and even the individual - Who is most appropriate to market to and how
marketing firms cultivate them. - Consumers must present a profile to marketers
16Marketing
- New retail and media regimes are evolving.
- Their industrial logic is based on
- Data mining (Checkpoint)
- Screening for appropriateness
- Targeted Tracking
- Interactivity (marketing employees into chat
rooms) - Mass customization
17Marketing Implications
- What you do online is forever.
- Companies can track online use and even get
around privacy policies (another presentation). - We are all creating our own reputation to
marketers. - For students this can affect college acceptance
and job offers. - Student need to think about what story they
want told about them online.
18Our Legal Standing as a School is Undefined
- We are in the 3rd circuit court of Federal Court
System. There has not been a long case history
in our circuit - However in the 9th circuit court of Federal Court
System. . . . . - Normal Nexus for schools . . . .
