What is iTex?
iTex is a modular SMS toolkit for local
authorities developed by Kirklees Council for
Project Nomad in 1993
iTex builds on the experience of Kirklees
Council's Chatback project - An SMS
communications channel used by young people aged
13 to 21
iTex provides local authorities with a number of
distinct SMS capabilities
iTex comes with the necessary documentation for
easy implementation

iTex Functionality
iTex Web Sender Client The iTex Web client is
one of the primary iTex products. It is from here
that all 'manual' text messages are sent. The Web
Sender Client contains a simple Message Sender,
Contacts Database, Sent Box, Inbox and basic
Administration.
iTex Administration The iTex Administration
system is the nerve centre of iTex, it is
utilised by administrators to set up users,
groups and accounts as well as create identifier
campaigns (Identifiers are useful for automatic
information provision and obtaining feedback -
through the use of simple key words), direct
incoming SMS messages to e-mail accounts and
assign security permissions.

iTex Functionality
iTex SMS Registration Package The iTex SMS
registration Package is a powerful SMS
application that will enable you to register
users via SMS and Web for a notification
services. The system automatically generates and
sends via SMS a unique username and password to
every user that registers. This can then be
used by registrants to amend their details online
or unsubscribe.

iTex Functionality
iTex Messenger Outgoing The iTex email to SMS
facility is a powerful use of the iTex web
service, which is implemented in conjunction with
LGOL-Net. This enables an email to be sent as a
text message, to an individual or group mail
list. LGOL can be downloaded free of charge from
the LAWS site.
iTex Messenger Incoming iTex SMS to email
provides the facility to send a text message and
for it to be received as an e-mail. This is done
by linking an iTex identifier to a destination
e-mail address. For example, people can report
a faulty street lamp by texting the keyword
'lamp' followed by location. The system will
identify the word 'lamp' then forward the SMS
message as an e-mail to the Highways Dept.

iTex Functionality
iTex Receipts Receipts can be used to great
effect within an organisation. This could be
automated using the supplied web service or
manually sent from the iTex Client Application.
For example, when a person reports a fault they
can choose to have a confirmation receipt sent to
them.
iTex Alert The iTex alert web service can be
implemented within councils to enable citizens to
sign up for message alerts in the same way as
they currently sign up for e-mail alerts. For
example, people can register to receive SMS
alerts when a new job is added to the vacancies
database.

iTex Functionality
iTex Web Service The iTex web service is the
heart of the iTex toolkit. It represents the core
functionality. It acts as a conduit, forwarding
data to and from the mobile providers and the
iTex administration system. An Authority can
choose to host this web service on its own
infrastructure, or in the case of iTex Lite,
consume this from Kirklees Council or another
Local Authority.

iTex Packages
iTex is available in two package options,
Corporate and Lite so Local Authorities can
choose the iTex products that suit their needs
and their infrastructure.

iTex Corporate
Description iTex Corporate is the standard
solution developed to meet the needs of Local
Government. iTex Corporate is hosted on your own
infrastructure and maintained by your team
although KMC can offer you On Site Service
Support if required. iTex Corporate will
require as a minimum an organisation to run and
maintain its own Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
with IIS and employ the Microsoft .NET Framework.

iTex Lite
Description iTex Lite offers organisation the
simplest way to develop a SMS communication
Channel. iTex Lite can be hosted and maintained
by a third party organisation for example
Kirklees Council which offer you a hosted
solution that only requires you to have a web
browser to administer and manage your own SMS
account. To improve performance it is
recommended that iTex Lite is implemented locally
on your own infrastructure.

installing Administration and Sender Clients on

iTex in Kirklees
iTex Web Service The Chatback website utilises
the iTex identifier functionality and the Web
Service to great effect, by providing a
sophisticated two way message information service
for young people. iTex Alerts To complement
our email registration service for Job Vacancies,
we are providing the facility for new jobs to be
notified to subscribers via SMS. We later plan
to provide this for notification of new planning
applications and decisions. iTex Receipts Using
the iTex Web Client, we are able to send
confirmation text messages for customers
contacting our Contact Centre (Kirklees Direct)
or One Stop Shops. This facility is also to be
embedded into our online forms. iTex
