  • In 2005, 260,500 was awarded in scholarships and
grants to 91 outstanding individuals and 24
    educational institutions, based on their
potential for long-range contribution to optics
and photonics, or a related discipline.

39

Application for Student Membership including dues
payment with the Scholarship Application to SPIE
by the 6 January 2006 deadline. Note High School
students may receive a complimentary (free)
Student Membership after submitting a Membership
    application.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students must be
enrolled full-time in an optics, photonics,
    imaging, optoelectronics program or related
discipline at an educational institution for the
academic year in which the Award will be used.
This requirement does not apply to high school
    students.
  • Must submit an Annual Scholarship Award Report if
reapplying. Your application must show new

    Award was based.

reference, a 450- word essay, and the Annual
Scholarship Award Report (if applicable) to SPIE
by the 6 January 2006 deadline.

Grants for Educational and Research Institutions
  • SPIE Grants are available to educational and
research institutions. Suggested uses of SPIE
grant awards include promotion of collaboration
between SPIE student chapters and leveraging of
    offsite scientific facilities sending students
to SPIE-sponsored events developing new courses
efforts at general public education (e.g. public
workshops) books and library subscriptions and
on occasion, purchase of supplemental teaching
tools or equipment. Grants are not meant to
support research. Maximum grant amount 5,000.

41
  • SPIE has expanded the Visiting Lecturer Program
that provides up to 800US in travel funding to
bring a distinguished lecturer to speak to your
chapter.  The new program (finally!) provides a
directory of lecturers who have agreed to travel
for chapter lectures, and it is easy to request a
    lecturer.
  • http//www.spie.org/Membership/index.cfm?fuseactio
    nVLP_Overview
  • This chapter benefit can be used once per
calendar year.  There is still time to arrange a
    lecturer for 2005!

42
  • My records indicate that your chapter has
received 700 in activity grant funding for
2005.  We budget this money for you, and
encourage you to use it for the benefit of your
chapter members and your community. As you know,
activity grant funding levels are based on the
number of members in your chapter, so I encourage
you to do some recruiting and keep your chapter
in good standing (10 members).  Our records
indicate that you currently have 16 active
    member(s) in your chapter.
