Alfred SteiglitzAmerican, 1864 - 1946

Alfred Stieglitz (January 1, 1864 July 13,
1946) was an American-born photographer who was
instrumental over his fifty-year career in making
photography an acceptable art form alongside
painting and sculpture. Many of his photographs
are known for appearing like those other art
forms, and he is also known for his marriage to
painter Georgia O'Keeffe.

  • Edward Weston (March 24, 1886 - January 1, 1958)
was an American photographer, and co-founder of
Group f/64. Most of his work was done using an 8
    by 10 inch view camera.
  • According to the group's manifesto, "the members
of Group f/64 believe that photography, as an art
form, must develop along lines defined by the
actualities and limitations of the photographic
medium, and must always remain independent of
ideological conventions of art and aesthetics
that are reminiscent of a period and culture
antedating the growth of the medium itself."

Imogen CunninghamAmerican, 1883-1976
  • From bold, evocative nudes to starkly beautiful
still lifes, Imogen Cunningham's impressive body
of work has garnered her worldwide acclaim. One
of the first women to make her living as a
    photographer, Cunningham consistently
experimented with a wide range of techniques
during her amazing career, which spanned seven
    full decades.
  • Starting in the 1920s, she began making sharply
focused, close up studies of plant life and
unconventional views of industrial structures and
modern architecture. Concerned with light, form,
    and abstract pattern, these photographs
established her as one of the pioneers of
modernist photography on the West Coast. In the
1930s, she joined the legendary San Francisco
collective f/64 with Ansel Adams and others.

Irving PennAmerican 1917
  • Irving Penn studied under Alexey Brodovitch at
the Philadelphia Museum School from which he
graduated in 1938. Penn's drawings were published
by Harper's Bazaar and he also painted. As his
career in photography blossomed, he became known
for post World War II feminine chic and glamour
    photography.
  • Penn worked for many years doing fashion
photography for Vogue magazine. He was among the
first photographers to pose subjects against a
simple grey or white backdrop and used this
    simplicity more effectively than other
    photographers.
  • Clarity, composition, careful arrangement of
objects or people, form, and the use of light
characterize Penn's work. Penn also photographs
still life objects and found objects in unusual
arrangements with great detail and clarity.

with their trauma. They've already passed their
