Life Skills Standard Roles and Responsibilities
Johnny is going from fifth grade to Middle
School. The paperwork is flawless however, when
the Middle School receives him, his Life Skills
Teacher blows a gasket. Apparently the well
written goal are too specific- requesting
programs that arent offered. How could this
have been avoided?
16
Advancement from elementary to middle school and
from middle to high school must be coordinated
between the sending and receiving campuses and
related support staff (PRIOR to an ARD).
Collaborating about everything from academics to
the students preferred food etc. can prevent
frustrations later on.
17
Life Skills Standard Curriculum
  • Each time the Coordinator visits the Life
Skills classroom, Maria is sitting on a beanbag
flicking beads no matter what time of day. Which
two tools are helpful in determining whether the
student is actively engaged throughout the day?

18
All students must be actively engaged throughout
the instructional day as evidenced by classroom
1)schedule and 2)data collection.
19
Life Skills Standard Behavior Management
Little Jimmy (who does not have a history of
behavioral issues and loves to eat) is becoming
increasingly aggressive when he is told no or
asked to do an activity that he does not like.
He has pushed several of the other students and
bit a little girl who uses a wheelchair. The
teacher should
20
a. Call Jimmys mom and ask if she can keep
him home the rest of the week. b.      Look Jimmy
right in the eye and say No! every time he
misbehaves. c.       Have Jimmy miss lunch after
any serious incidents of aggression. d.      Call
to make an appointment with the Behavior
Specialist so they can do a Functional Behavior
Analysis. e.       Meet ASAP with Jimmys
family, and others who know him, and write a FBA.

Life Skills Standard Student Communication
Jamal is non-verbal and does not read print.
What does he need to access his education?
23
All students must have a communication system and
access to adapted equipment and devices as
appropriate
24
Life Skills Standard Schedules
  • When the Principal, Mr. Abbott, drops in to view
Mrs. Taylor's 4th grade Life Skills Classroom, he
finds the room empty. As he glances around the
room, he observes numerous picture symbols on the
wall. Focusing his attention on the large
calendar posted on the chalkboard, Mr. Abbott
notes that today the class is volunteering at the
    Humane Society.

25
The classroom schedule(s) and/or calendars(s) are
posted.

Life Skills Standard Inclusion
Steve is in the fifth grade. He is beginning to

His teacher decides that the best inclusion
placement is in Pre-K where he can be on the
same academic level with his peers. Is this an
appropriate placement?

Transition
Life Skills Standard Transition
Since Transition doesnt start until High School,
information regarding community service agencies
should be obtained by families without support
and they should wait to get on those agency
waiting lists until a student is at least in
Middle School.
33
The answer is
  • Transition planning is required at age 13
(doesnt matter at what grade) and continues
    throughout the students school career.
  • Transition planning is often appropriate to do
    in elementary school.

34
Parents should be given information regarding
waiting lists and community service agencies as
early as possible PPCD - High School.

Life Skills Standard Data
Collection
  • Ms. Valley is a teaching assistant in Mr.
    Leafs Life Skills class and
she takes data on Baileys IEP objectives each
week. Is this an assignment that can be given to
Ms. Valley, even if the Ms. Valley does not have
    teacher certification?

40
  • Data must be taken on all IEP goals/objectives
and documented at least twice a week or as
    specified in the IEP
  • Teachers may designate Teaching Assistants to
