1
WFEO/FMOI
  • Barry J Grear AO
  • President 2007-2009
  • Hon FIEAust, FIPENZ, FAICD, FACE
  • bjgrear_at_wfeo.org

2
VISION
  • WFEO is the internationally recognized and chosen
leader of the engineering profession and
cooperates with national and other international
professional institutions in being the lead
profession in developing and applying engineering
    to constructively resolve international and
national issues for the benefit of humanity.

3
MISSION
  • To represent the engineering profession
    internationally, providing the collective wisdom
and leadership of the profession to assist
    national agencies choose appropriate policy
options that address the most critical issues
    affecting countries of the world.

4
Mission Continued
  • To enhance the practice of engineering.
  • To make information on engineering
available to the countries of the world and to
    facilitate communication between its member
nations of worlds best practice in key
    engineering activities.

5
Mission Continued
  • To foster socio-economic security and sustainable
development and poverty alleviation among all
countries of the world, through the proper
    application of technology.
  • To serve society and to be recognised by national
and international organisations and the public,
as a respected and valuable source of advice and
guidance on the policies, interests and concerns
that relate engineering and technology to the
    human and natural environment.

6
Continue support of President Ayadi activities
  • Make WFEO high on the agenda of National,
    International and Associate Members.
  • Encourage WFEO Standing Committees to carry out
activities in line with WFEO Mission and Vision
and with key UN agency Making WFEO more visible
    at the international level
  • programs.
  • I will seek quarterly reporting so that I can
regularly promote programs and outcomes during
all of my visits and speeches.
  • Encourage Members of all categories to pay their
    subscription.
  • All Executive Council Members to be given tasks.
  • Have ALL Executive Council Members contributing
to decision making during the next 2 years.
  • Have an active email and postal address to
    facilitate communication.

7
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • I want to lead the organisation in increasing our
    influence in the world.
  • I firmly believe that by increasing the amount of
communication amongst ourselves and to the wider
international community we can achieve our
    Vision.

8
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • The priorities for WFEO must necessarily change
    over the next few years.
  • The standing of engineers in the economic,
    environmental, political and social issues
affecting changing society demands that we do
change and go forward with everything we do.

9
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • The long time frame for activities undertaken by
Standing Committees in an increasingly rapidly
    changing world of political, environmental,
social and financial challenges means that
periods of 4 to 8 years are a long time to
    maintain activities and themes.
  • I believe the strategic directions of the
committees need reviewing and re-endorsement at
each General Assembly. There is also an
    increasing need to ensure complementarily
    activity between the Standing Committees.

10
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • I accept that major issues of poverty reduction,
climate change and infrastructure maintenance and
development are possible areas of overlap that
    need to be carefully managed.

11
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • To encourage all WFEO National Members to
actively participate in the activities of the
General Assembly and Standing Committees. To
achieve this we need to give careful
consideration to the cost of attendance. We
cannot on the one hand expect developing
countries to participate and then set costs which
make it near impossible to do so.

12
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • I will be working with the Tunis Office to
provide more information for the Web page
(www.wfeo.org) so that it is used as a resource
for the Individual, National and International
    members.

13
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • MUOs signed with CAETS and the agreement to sign
with FIDIC provides opportunities to widen our
    involvement in the international engineering
community and strengthen the potential for us to
    apply engineering to constructively resolve
international and national issues for the benefit
    of humanity.
  • I believe that there is benefit in considering
partnerships with other international bodies with
like interests, such as Engineers Without Borders
    and RedR International.

14
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • Climate change is important for us all and the
projected changes will bring difficulties to all
communities. Our members can assist in ensuring
that the collection of reliable climate data and
the use and interpretation of that data is widely
    available.

15
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • The evidence is clear that there will be
increasingly severe weather events leading to
greater incidences and severity of natural
disasters. WFEO Standing Committees and National
Engineering Societies should look for greater
    opportunities to participate in mitigation
planning and the design of buildings and
structures that will make communities safer.

WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • Energy production has been raised in its profile
because of the cost of fuels, the environmental
impact, and development of renewable energy
sources. The role of WFEO members, together with
key standing Committees can assist in helping
developing countries select the most appropriate
    energy sources.

22
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • WFEO has lead the Science, Technology and
Innovation Task Force of the Millennium
Development Goals, there is concern that the
reduction of interest by governments will inhibit
the achievement of the goals. I will encourage
all National Societies to persuade their Heads of
Government to continue the agenda and action
plans that they agreed to promote.

23
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • I have welcomed the increasing number of
individuals who in 2005, and now in 2007, have
nominated for positions on Executive Council. For
WFEO to become more effective in meeting its
mission, we need to increase the number of
engineers who become active in the Standing
Committees and in their own Regional and National
    societies.

24
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • Once again WFEO has the chance to showcase itself
at the WEC2008 in December 2008 in Brasília. This
important international event will be held in
conjunction with the 2008 Executive Council
meeting. The support of CONFEA, FEBRAE and the
international leadership of President Ayadi and
Past President Medem has been significant. I
request all WFEO members to support this event as
a world event, and to encourage their own
    national colleagues to participate.

25
WFEO PRESIDENT PLAN OF ACTION 2007-2009
  • It is vital for the engineering profession for
leadership opportunities for women engineers to
be identified, encouraged and supported by all.
  • I will be similarly encouraging the involvement
    of young engineers.

26
FUTURE FOR ALL
  • It is vital for the engineering profession for
leadership opportunities for women engineers to
be identified, encouraged and supported by all.
  • I will be similarly encouraging the involvement
    of young engineers.

27
DOING NOT JUST REPORTING
  • I intend revisiting and reporting on progress of
the declarations and recommendations of the World
    Engineers Conventions
  • Hanover, 2000 (Humanity, Nature and
    Technology),
  • Shanghai, 2004 (Engineers Shape the Sustainable
    World),
  • Brasilia in 2008 (Engineering Innovation with
    Social Responsibility),

28
WFEO/FMOI
  • As you can see, the success of WFEO relates to
the effort put in by its members.
  • Any ideas and contributions are encouraged.
  • It is an energising experience to juggle
    countries, economies, legislation, engineering
    disciplines, languages, cultures, politics and
    religions

29
MY COMMITMENT
  • I believe that together, great accomplishments
can, and will, be made and I pledge myself to
enthusiastically lead the World Federation of
Engineering Organisations in partnership with you
    all.
