Trouble in Congress

• Radical and Moderate Republicans held power in
  Congress and did not like Johnson
• Passed many strict reconstruction acts over
  Johnsons veto
• Created new state governments which protected the
  rights of African Americans

Impeachment

• After Johnson tried to get around their control,
  they impeached him
• However moderates worried about preserving
  balance of power and impeachment narrowly failed

Election of 1868

• 7 states had been readmitted in the Union
• Grant, the Republican candidate, had no political
  experience, but was popular
• Republicans didnt endorse black suffrage
  referendum failed in 8 states
• Horatio Seymour, the Democratic candidate, tried
  to play the race card
• The Ku Klux Klan swayed the vote for the
  Democrats in some states
• 15th Amendment Prevented discrimination (with
  loopholes)
• By 1870, all the states were back in the Union

Womens Suffrage

• Many women wanted the right to vote as the
  African Americans were granted suffrage
• Some radicals even wanted womens suffrage but
  not non-white suffrage
• By 1869, women split in 2 groups
• A(merican)WSA rights on state level
• N(ational)WSA part of goals from Declaration of
  Sentiments
• Paved the road for womens suffrage later
