HARRIET TUBMAN

• Harriet Tubman was born a slave in the US in
  1820. With the help of Quakers, she escaped from
  slavery through the underground railroad to
  Philadelphia, a free state. She returned to
  slave states to help free over 300 African slaves
  through the use of the underground railroad which
  lead to Canada.

JEAN AUGUSTINE

• Jean Augustine is an educator, administrator and
  a politician. She arrived in Canada from Grenada
  as part of the domestic-service program in 1961.
  She later earned a Master of Arts in education.
  As a teacher and principal she brought her vision
  to the community and into politics.

ROSMARY BROWN

• Rosemary Brown was the first Black woman in
  Canada to win a seat in a Legislative Assembly in
  1972. She was appointed the Chief Commissioner
  of the Ontario Human Rights Commission in 1993
  for a three year term. She has an interest in
  feminism, fighting against racism, sexism and a
  commitment to global peace.

ZANANA AKANDE

• Zanana Akande is an
• educator
• consultant
• politician
• anti-racist activist
• director of Milestone Radio Inc.
• She is a leader in the community engaged in
  diversity and equity issues in support for social
  justice.

CONCLUSION

• These Black women leaders and many others have
  visions, are committed and empower others. They
  question the existing norms of inequality and
  exclusion of marginalized groups within our
  communities locally and globally.
