System Outputs Power, Energy Carbon
  • Solar PV systems are usually referred to in terms
of the maximum potential power they could
    generate in full sunlight
  • Potential power is measured in kilowatt peak
    (kWp)
  • The amount of electrical energy that 1kWp will
generate will vary depending upon the type of
cells used and the amount of sunlight falling on
    them
  • In the UK a 1kWp photovoltaic system will
generate between 750 850 kWh of electricity per
    annum
  • Electricity generated is zero carbon and replaces
mains electricity that has a carbon footprint of
    0.43kg/kWh

7
System Sizes
  • A 2kWp PV system is an average sized domestic
    system
  • 2kWp of PV is typically 12 panels which will
cover about 16-20 m² of roof area
  • A 2kWp system of polycrystalline modules will
generate about 1500kWh of electricity per annum
and cut 645 kg of CO2 emissions
  • The annual electricity consumption of an average
house (3 bed/4 person) is 3300kWh per annum so
fitting a 2kWp PV system will reduce bills by
    about 45

8
Benefits of PV
  • Easy to install
  • No bulky internal equipment or layout alterations
  • Maintenance free
  • Less planning restrictions
  • Electricity generation offers highest carbon
    savings
  • Long system life
  • Proven to work sunshine much more certain than
    wind in an urban environment
