Mulch Recycling Process

• Stockpile
• Grind (tub grinder)
• Store (windrows)
• Monitor (temperature)
• Turn (loaders)
• Repeat steps 4 and 5 as needed
• Employ final product

• Leaf bales from fall leaf collection

Grinding

• Move grinder between 2 sites
• Mix raw materials evenly
• Grind raw material into consistent mass
• Morbark 1200

Storing/Windrows

• Space-limited sites (40 acres and 20 acres)
• Licensed to maintain 20,000 CY maximum on each
  yard waste site
• Windrows up to 25 feet wide by 12 feet high (not
  optimal size)

Issues

• Given that up to 90,000 CY (estimated) of
  material can cycle through Yard Waste Centers
  annually, DPW must find uses for product
• Need time to properly monitor and turn mulch
  piles
• Mulch is a 90 productnot perfect

• Found contractors to purchase raw material and
  mulch
• Currently selling for 0.50 per CY
• 2006 6,730 CY sold to 6 entities
• 2007 23,443 CY sold to 9 entities
• 2008 2,524 CY sold (Jan. through March) to 3
  entities
• Lots of material used by City and residents
• Always looking for more outlets and uses
