Title: Integrated Pest Management
1Integrated Pest Management
Dr. Marc L. LameIndiana University, School of
Public and Environmental Affairs
2PREFACE Where am I coming from?
- As an former CE IPM Specialist frustrated
- As a current implementer of IPM - grateful
- As an ex-enviro. Regulator - confused
- As a taxpayer/parent angry
- As an entomologist - excited
3Integrated Pest Management Defined
- IPM is a process for achieving long term,
environmentally sound pest suppression through
the use of a wide variety of technological and
management practices - USEPA
4Pest
- A biological entity which competes with humans
for food, shelter, water and ATTENTION!
5Arthropod Pests
6Vertebrate Pests

10Management Techniques Used as Part of Urban IPM
Programs
- Improving hygiene standards
- Habitat manipulation
- Encouraging natural occurring biological control
species - Selection of target specific control products
that have low mammalian toxicity and low
environmental impact - Biological control products
- Pest proofing
11What is IPM?
- Dont attract Pests
- Keep them out
- Get rid of them, if you are sure you have them
with the safest, most effective method(s)

14Cultural
Involves manipulation of the pests environment
to make it less favorable for the pest to exist.
It may also be referred to as habitat
modification or environmental alteration.
15Mechanical/Physical
- Excluding (pest proofing) pests using barriers,
including screens, seals, nets and caulking - Manually removing pests using hands, snares or by
vacuuming - Setting traps, including sticky, electric,
light, multiple catch and snap types - The use of heat or cold to destroy pests
16Biocontrol
- Predators
- Parasitoids
- Pathogens
17Chemical
- Pesticides herbicides, fungicides,
insecticides, rodenticides, etc - Label (FIFRA)
- Timing
- Coverage
- In general pesticides kill pests they DONT
prevent pests!
18what do todays scientists say?- Body Burden,
Environmental Working Group, Mt. Sinai School of
Community Medicine and Commonweal, 2003
- An average of 91 chemical contaminants in the
human body - Of 167 chemicals found, 76 cause cancer, 94 are
toxic to nervous systems and 79 cause birth
defects or abnormal development - 17 are pesticide breakdown products
19RED HERRINGS
- 1. The Toxicity Arguments
- consistent with the label doesnt mean necessary,
- Inerts have no effect,
- but its poison
- 2. IPM costs too much horse pucky
- Know the economics of your system
- What is your model?
20Implementing Integrated Pest Management Pest
Management is People Management
21Thus, IPM must be defined as an INNOVATION to be
adopted
- IPM is a cluster of technologies (cultural,
mechanical, biological, genetic, and chemical)
which is an integrated application (based on
biological information) designed to allow humans
to compete with other species (pests).
22Marc defines the Pest Management Professional as
an
23Diagnostician/educator
- The doctor/patient relationship
- History (question the patient)
- Examination
- diagnosis
- Curative action
- Preventive Medicine
- behavior modification
- Check-up
24PMP - Diagnostician
- Your professional relationship
- History
- Inspection for conducive conditions
- Inspection for pests
- ID and biology
- monitoring
25Perform regular inspections
26Know where to look
27 And what is Bobby looking for?
Conducive Conditions those things that attract
pests and allow them to be where you dont want
them.
28Monitoring
- The only way to justify pesticide application
- Allows for proper diagnosis
29Whatkind of roach?
30What does it meanbaby roaches?
31Your eyes 24/7but not your mind
32Whose been eating in this trap?
33Justified Applications
- Treat every pesticide like it might be bannedbe
precautious! - Timing and Coverage based on children and target
pest
34PMP - Educator
- Your professional relationship is a Partnership
to teach your patient how to - To prevent pests
- Inspect for pests
- ID and biology
- Monitoring
- To Remove pests
35Moth Fly required a shift in strategies
36Pest perception!
37IPM Training
- pest ID
- Pest Biology
- conducive condition ID and remediation
- All management alternatives and their safe use!
- Thus
38Pest Prevention is Everyones Job
39 Bobby says Ecological Equivalents
- Wet places where is your swamp?
- Warm places where is your jungle?
- Tight places where is your bark?
- Safe places where is your shelter?
- Safe places where is your escape?
- Dining places where is your food?
- Pooping places where is your bathroom?

48 Pest Vulnerable Areas
- Kitchen, pantry and cafeteria
- Dumpsters
- Teachers lounge
- Custodial closets
- Special Ed/Kindergarten/classroom
- Bathrooms
- External grounds
- Commonalities Food, Water, Shelter
49Sanitation
- Eliminate food, water and harborage for pests
50Exclusion
- Eliminate pest entry points
51control
- Doing what you do now---just think pests!!!
- Repair what is broken
- Remove the source of the problem
- Communicate with the responsible person
- Professional improvement
52Verification!
53Minimum Implementation Standards
- Those that manage their environment (building or
grounds) know what their pest management program
is. - Those responsible for the cultural (sanitation)
and mechanical (exclusion) components of IPM
have been trained to incorporate them into
existing job responsibilities . - Those responsible for the chemical pesticide
component of IPM are certified (with instructions
to treat as needed and based on monitoring)
54Spanning 10 Years, 7 States and 5 EPA Regions
- 71 Reduction in Pesticide Applications
- 78 Reduction in Pest Complaints to School
Administrations
