Title: Using Primary Trait Rubrics in Teaching and Assessment

1
Using Primary Trait Rubrics in Teaching and
Assessment
2
Definition
  • Rubrics are assessment tools that identify the
primary traits necessary in an assignment.
  • For each trait or aspect of the assignment, a
scale is constructed clearly defining what is
    necessary for a particular grade.

3
  • For example, on a paper using current references
would be one trait. An A might be defined as
using at least ten current references. Each of
the other grades would be defined.
  • Having specific information about what
constitutes high levels of performance invites
    students to produce quality work.

4
My experience with rubrics
  • I began to use rubrics to make grading easier and
    more objective.
  • Developing rubrics pushed me to make my
    assignments grading criteria clearer more
    specific.
  • Having rubrics allowed students to know exactly
    what I expected.

5
Using rubrics to invite self-reflection
evaluation
  • Students need to learn to think about what they
are doing and to analyze and evaluate their work.
  • In order to encourage students to thoughtfully
review and evaluate their work, I ask them to
grade their work using the appropriate rubric.

Using rubrics in assessment
  • Formative assessment Rubrics can be used as
ongoing ways of measuring student progress. This
feedback provides direction for further teaching.
  • Summative assessment Rubrics can be used to
    measure achievement of specific objectives,
    competencies, or learning goals.
