London Overground Improvement Programme
  • General Background
  • Work has begun on a 326 million upgrade of
    Transport for Londons (TfL) Overground network.
    When complete, passengers will see longer trains
    and more frequent services, and will benefit from
    reliable connections to the main London 2012
    Olympic and Paralympic Games Park in Stratford.
  • London Overground will run up to eight trains an
    hour during peak times on parts of the network
    when the upgrade is complete, double the current
    number and with a more reliable timetable for
    those trains. New and longer platforms at some
    stations will also allow more carriages per
    train, which will increase capacity and reduce
    overcrowding.
  • Work has been fast-tracked to ensure completion
    before 2012 and is being carried out by Network
    Rail as part of plans to improve rail services in
    and around the Capital.
  • As part of the program of work, Network Rail
    engineers will
  • Upgrade more than 200 signals
  • Renew 7km of track and 69 sets of points
  • Lengthen 30 platforms
  • Improve seven more stations.
  • TfL are also carrying out a programme of station
    improvements on the route these include
    upgraded CCTV, PA, lighting and passenger
    information screens new signs general
    refurbishment and new lifts at some locations
    and will continue in tandem with the line
    upgrades in order to minimise disruption to
    passengers.
  • Some services will need to be suspended while
    work takes place over the next eighteen months.
    TfL will provide rail replacement bus services
    while this happens to keep passengers connected
    to the public transport network.

  • Works programme - Area east of Highbury
    Islington station
  • Key Dates
  • 19 April 2009 - Start of works on site between
    Camden Road and Highbury Grove. After this date,
    the railway will be shut every Sunday to
    facilitate the works
  • 26 May 2009 - Start of work between Highbury
    Grove and Dalston Kingsland
  • Christmas 2009 - All lines will be closed between
    Stratford and Gospel Oak
  • April 2010 - Railway reopened
  • June 2010 - Introduction of first 4 car trains
  • Sequence of work
  • Initially we closed the northern freight line
    through the site and establish temporary
    signalling.
  • We have also started cleaning up the lineside
    area and the undergrowth on the alignment of the
    new tracks at the foot of the slope only. The
    existing overhead line electrification will be
    removed. A temporary set of buffers has been
    installed at Highbury Islington station, on the
    closed freight lines.
  • There is an existing sewer running under the
    railway - this takes sewage from surrounding
    streets and rainwater from the railway cutting.
    There are two outfalls for these sewers, one at
    Caledonian Road and the other at Mildmay Park. We
    will replace these sewers, where necessary, by
    laying a new pipe in the northern side of the
    cutting, between Caledonian Road and Mildmay
    Park.
  • The retaining walls between Caledonian Road and
    Liverpool Road are currently propped apart by
    timber or concrete props buried beneath the
    tracks. These props will be renewed by precast
    concrete struts, again buried beneath the tracks.
  • The railway will then be re-laid to the new
    alignment.
  • Following this, overhead line electrification and
    a new signalling system will be installed.

  • How We Work On Site
  • Access and Deliveries
  • Our workforce will access the sites via public
    transport or will be dropped off by minibus.
  • All our workforce will be briefed that this is a
    residential area and are expected to work in a
    considerate manner.
  • Materials will largely be delivered by rail, and
    trains will be used to transport the spoil we dig
    out.
  • We will require a limited amount of material to
    be delivered by road - largely small components
    and time sensitive material, such as ready mixed
    concrete.
  • The access points for our work will be via well
    established access points at
  • Salamis Yard - off Caledonian Road
  • Court Gardens - off Liverpool Road
  • Boleyn Road
  • Working Hours
  • Between April and December 2009
  • Tuesday to Friday - 08.00 to 18.00
  • Saturday - 08.00 to 12.00
  • Sundays - 00.00 to 24.00
  • Mondays - 00.00 to 18.00
  • These times are to suit the Planned Closure of
    the North London Railway - we will plan our work
    to avoid carrying out noisy works during the
    hours of darkness

  • Station Improvements
  • In parallel with all this activity, the stations
    along the route will be renewed
  • Caledonian Road and Barnsbury Station will be
    remodelled as a single island platform. A new
    footbridge will be constructed, complete with
    lifts.
  • Highbury and Islington Station will have new
    platforms on the north side. These will serve the
    North London Railway, while the newly built East
    London Railway will run into the existing
    platforms. Lifts will be provided for passengers
    to the East and North London line platforms and
    the concourse will be enlarged.
  • Cannonbury Station will be remodelled as a four
    platform interchange between the East and North
    London Railways. Lifts will be provided for
    passengers on the East and North London railway
    lines.
  • Dalston Kingsland Station will have longer
    platforms constructed, this will involve
    rebuilding Boleyn Road Bridge.
  • The construction work will take place from April
    2009 to April 2010
