my own method of tackling it - I am good at expressing myself and explaining my

point of view - When I make mistakes I make sure that I learn

11 6 Steps to Support Learning

material covered is lost unless reviewed
165. Model learning for your children
- Are you taking a qualification?
- Are you learning a new skill?
- What do you do when things go wrong?
- Where could you apply the 5Rs at home?
176. Consider your childs learningenvironment
- Is it well ventilated?
- Are the lighting levels appropriate?
- Is there water available?
- How does your child like to sit when learning?

20Extended Learning Activities (ELAs)
Why has homework changed?
Examination and coursework requirements have
changed considerably meeting deadlines and
applying knowledge and skills to unfamiliar
situations are increasingly important. Why wait
until GCSEs to develop these areas?
21Extended Learning Activities (ELAs)
- What are (ELAs)
- tasks set by class teachers over a longer period
of time than traditional homework - often require classroom skills/knowledge to be
applied to new situations - often include a degree of choice, encouraging
independent learning - Available at least half a term in advance from
the schools virtual learning environment - www.e-blenheim.org.uk
22Extended Learning Activities (ELAs)
- Aims
- to encourage students to develop the skills,
confidence and motivation to study effectively on
their own - to extend students learning
- to sustain the involvement of parents/carers in
their childrens learning - to help students manage their time
- to broaden students understanding of the
curriculum
23Extended Learning Activities (ELAs)
- How can parents/carers help?
- discuss any current extended learning activities
with your child when they are set by staff - make sure they are clear about what is expected,
and encourage them to speak to their subject
teacher if they are not - encourage your child to spend a fixed amount of
time on these tasks each day the recommendation
is between one hour and an hour and a quarter
(total)
24Extended Learning Activities (ELAs)
How can parents/carers help?
- provide students with a quiet place to study,
away from distractions such as television and
MSN! - monitor interim and final deadlines to ensure
your child is successful in meeting deadlines - take them to the library if more information is
needed, and help them search the internet
sensibly - resist the temptation to do the work for them!
