Day 5ABSTINENCE A RESPONSIBLE CHOICE
  • Objectives for the day
  • Define Abstinence.
  • Recognize that abstinence as the only 100 way to
    prevent negative consequences of risk behavior.
  • Use a decision-making model.
  • Identify and implement resistance skills (You
    have decided to say NO, but now how do I say
    it!).

ABSTINENCE
  • What is Abstinence?
  • Abstinence is saying NO to any unhealthy risk
    behaviors such as teen sexual activity or drug
    usage.

If I can say NO to any one of these questions,
then it is in my own best interest to step away
from the situation and evaluate it further.

RESISTANCE SKILLSWays to say NO to risk
behaviors (behaviors that can harm people).
  • Look at the person. Say NO in a
    firm voice.
  • Give reasons for saying NO.
  • Match your behavior to your words.
  • (dont send mixed messages)
  • Ask an adult for help if you need it.

Here are other tips for resisting risk behaviors
  • Keep away from situations in which people might
    try to talk you into wrong actions.
  • Keep away from people who take wrong actions.
  • Tell an adult if someone tries to talk you into
    doing something wrong.
  • Help your friends do what is right.
