  • AIM
  • The aim of our project is to reduce the use of
electricity in our homes and school by 15 over a
    3 month period of time.
  • INTRODUCTION
  • There are many ways we can use energy more
efficiently in our daily lives. Our project will
examine the use of electricity in our homes and
school. It will raise an awareness that simple
actions can cut down energy consumption
    substantially.

3
Electricity
  • Form of energy
  • Even though you cant really see it,
energy causes millions of different actions and
reactions to occur every single day.
  • Sources
  • Watt
  • A watt is a scientific unit of electrical
power. It is used to describe electrical power
    consumption of an electrical appliance.

There are many different energy sources, which
included hydropower, nuclear energy, oil coal,
natural gas, solar, biomass, geothermal, and
wind.

History /Discovery
  • The English scientist William Gilbert in 1600 got
the name electricity from the Greek word for
    amber.
  • The invention went as far back as 600 B.C.
  • In 1650 the German physicist, Otto von Guerike
    experimented with generating electricity.
  • The English physicist, Stephen Gray discovered
    electrical conductivity in 1729.
  • Benjamin Franklin did his famous kite experiment,
identifying lightning as a form of electrical
    discharge in 1752.
  • During the 1780s, the biologist Luigi Galvani
performed experiments at the University of
Bologna involving electric charges and frogs. It
had been found that a charge applied to the
spinal cord of a frog could generate muscular
    spasms throughout its body.
  • Alessandro Volta invented an electric battery,
the first source of DC current in 1800.
  • In 1878 the best source of lighting was gas.
This was far from convenient and also dirty,
    unhealthy and dangerous.
  • In 1878 Thomas Edison decided to try to perfect
    the light bulb.

Life Before Electricity
  • We asked P6 students to question older people
about what life was like before electricity.
These are the questions we asked them. This is a
    selection of their responses
  • What was life like for you before electricity?
  • We used candles, parafin lamps And table lamps
It was hard and not very bright , There was no
tv or washing machine Very dark at night in
    the country.
  • What did you use to help you read?
  • Oil Lamps, candles and gas light Open Fire
    In summer, natural light.
  • How did you cope with school and doing homework
    without electricity?
  • We had gas light and when the money ran
out, the gas ran out. During the war we only
had a glimmer of light every night.

  • Energy Green Code (Rap)
  • Were imagining today is 1907,
  • Well become great savers by 2011,
  • Weve found lots of ways to keep the power down,
  • And were getting it together to save our green
    town.
  • Windows closed!
  • Heating down!
  • These are some ways to make a great town,
  • If we all join together we can make it work,
  • Well be energy efficient and save the earth,
  • Well be energy efficient and save the earth,
  • Well be energy efficient to save THE EARTH!

Electricity Saving Tips
  • Switch off lights when not in use.
  • Dont leave appliances on standby.
  • Take a shower rather then a bath. A typical
shower uses only one fifth of the energy of a
    full bath.
  • Switching off the screen saver can save even more
then just letting the screen saver run.
  • Dont put warm or hot foods straight into the
freezer- let them cool down first.
  • At a certain point in cooking, turn off electric
rings and use their residual heat.
  • Open fires are wasteful of energy with more than
70 of the energy going up the chimney.
  • Insulate your attic and save up to 20 on your
    home heating bill.

11
Power-OFF Day(Wed 12th Dec, 2007)
  • P4 "We thought it wasn't dark, we loved it! No
concentration, we thought we were very sleepy and
    they got headaches.
  • P5Anna" I liked not having to write much."
  • Kate "We couldn't use any lights we hated it.
  • Mrs. Middleton "Haven't been able to use any of
    the schools electrical equipment.
  • As you can see, there was a mixed reaction to our
"Power Off Day. On the whole, it was greatly
    enjoyed by everyone.

Visitors
  • Kate Hynes Assistant Environmental Officer, Dun
Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Kates talk
was on the energy phase of the Green Schools
    programme.
  • 2. Christina Campbell Scientist with group
Anyone for Science. Christina had an
    electricity workshop for our class.
  • 3. Albert Donohue Senior engineer for
Eirgrid. Albert gave us a presentation on
electricity, the sources of electricity and how
    the national grid works

13
Conclusions
  • It is evident from our research and our
surveys that we all have a much greater awareness
of energy use and the cost of electricity in our
homes and school. We have all made changes that
    hopefully benefit our environment.

14
Conclusions
15
Conclusions
  • 1. From the figures presented, it is clearly
evident that using CFL light bulbs can save an
average of 17.5 in electricity costs. This is
based on 1000 hrs p/a or 20 hours per week.
  • 2. From the standby survey, we have no way of
calculating the number of hours on standby. We
would expect a saving of 2-3. This would give a
potential saving of 20 per household.
  • 3. The Junior School has replaced all florescent
light bulbs with an A rated for energy efficiency
    and 5 savings.
  • 4. The school has implemented a Close the Door
and Turn off the lights policy. All appliances
are not left on standby any more. The thermostat
was turned down by one degree.
