Overview
  • History
  • Mission

  • Contributions
  • Conclusion

3
History
  • Launched 7 December 2001 from Vandenberg AFB, CA
  • 74.1 inclination and 625 km circular orbit
  • NASA sponsored remote sensing project
  • Initially planned as two year operation

4
Mission
  • Primary objective of TIMED focused on improving
understanding of energy transfer into and out of
    Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere/Ionosphere
    (MLTI) region of earths atmosphere
  • Provide understanding of basic structure that
results from energy transfer into the region

5
Mission Continued
6
Mission Continued
  • MLTI region located 40 110 miles above earths
    surface
  • Extremely sensitive to external influences from
the sun above and changes to the region from
    below
  • TIMED uses remote sensing technology to gather
    measurements concerning wind, temperature, and
    density

7
Onboard Instruments
  • Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI)
  • Spatial-scanning, far-uv spectrograph designed to
globally measure the composition and temperature
profiles of the MLTI region, as well as its
    auroral energy inputs
  • Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Experiment (SEE)
  • Spectrometer/photometers designed to measure the
    solar soft X-rays, extreme-ultraviolet and
far-ultraviolet radiation that is deposited into
    the MLT region.

8
Onboard Instruments Continued
  • TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI)
  • Measures the wind and temperature profiles of the
    MLTI region
  • Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband
    Emission Radiometry (SABER)
  • Radiometer used to measure heat emitted by the
atmosphere over a broad altitude and spectral
range, as well as global temperature profiles and
    sources of atmospheric cooling

9
Contributions
  • Measurements taken by TIMED will provide critical
empirical data to help scientists better
    understand the region's energy balance
  • TIMED will establish a baseline for future
investigations of the MLTI region, providing a
basis for early warning of global change
