6
Fitness
  • Definition
  • The ability to meet the demands of everyday
    life.
  • There are two types of fitness.
  • These being
  • General Fitness
  • Specific Fitness

7
General Fitness
  • Definition
  • Youre healthy, and can do everyday activities
    without feeling too tired.

8
The Four Ss
  • Strength
  • Speed
  • Stamina
  • Suppleness

9
Strength
  • The force muscles exert when they contract.
  • You need strength to lift a suitcase or push a
    rugby scrum.
  • If you have too little strength you risk injury
when you lift, pull or push things.

10
Speed
  • This is the time taken to move the body or part
of the body over a given distance.
  • You need to move quickly to avoid traffic, catch
buses and chase the ball in basketball.

11
Stamina/Endurance
  • This is the bodies ability to keep going for long
    periods of time.
  • Two types
  • Cardiovascular
  • Muscular

12
Cardiovascular Stamina
  • This is the ability of your heart to deliver
oxygen to your muscles over long periods of
    exercise.
  • Since the lungs are also involved it is sometimes
    called cardiorespiratory endurance.

13
Muscular Endurance
  • This is the ability of your muscles to maintain
and repeat contractions without getting tired.

14
Suppleness/Flexibility
  • This is the range of movement at a joint.
  • You need it for tying your laces, reaching up to
    a shelf, or playing sports.
  • If you have poor flexibility you move stiffly,
and are more likely to injure yourself during
    violent movements.

15
Specific Fitness
  • This is the fitness required to play sports.
  • Agility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Explosive Strength
  • Fast Reactions
  • Good Timing

16
Agility
  • This is the ability to change the bodys position
    and direction quickly.
  • You need to be agile when playing football, it
helps you avoid injury as well as catch the ball.

17
Balance
  • This is the ability to hold a posture without
    wobbling or falling over.
  • When you are standing on one leg, gymnasts and
ice-skaters need a good sense of balance.

18
Co-ordination
  • This is the ability to move your body parts
smoothly and accurately in response to what your
    senses tell you.
  • Returning a serve in tennis and aerobics.

19
Explosive Strength/Power
  • You need power to hit the ball hard in cricket or
tackle in rugby or do a karate chop.
  • This is a combination of strength and speed.

20
Speed of Reaction
  • This is the time it takes for you to respond to a
    stimulus.
  • How long it takes you to start running in
    response to the starting pistol.
  • Fast reactions are a big advantage in most
    sports.

21
Timing
  • This is the ability to act at the right moment.
  • (You need to judge when it is the best time to
tackle your opponent on the football field, or
return a hard shot in tennis)

22
The Link between Health and Fitness
  • Health and fitness are closely linked.
  • The more easily you can meet the demands on you,
the less likely you are to suffer stress, or fall
    ill, or injure yourself.
  • Exercise makes you healthier. It also makes you
    fitter.
