1
Lakefield Church of England Primary School
  • Oh no not SATs!!

2
What are they?
  • Standardised assessment tasks
  • Must be taken at the end of each Key Stage (year
    2, 6, 9, age 7, 11, 14) legal requirement in
    England
  • Must be reported to parents at the end of each
    key stage
  • Published and used for comparisons
  • Also optional interim SATs at years 3, 4, 5,
7, 8 school administered not statutory but are
advisory this is likely to change next year.

3
Key Stage 1 age 7
  • Changed from 2005
  • Emphasis on performance over the year, not the
    test
  • School decides when to test
  • School decides how much to test
  • Ongoing teacher assessment is more important than
    the test
  • Results moderated, then reported to you

4
Key Stage 1 tasks and tests
  • Reading reading aloud to teacher, reading
    comprehension paper
  • Writing special task set, but samples collected
    over the year too
  • Maths tasks and tests at differing levels
  • Moderation between schools and by LA

5
Key Stage 1 testing
  • Evidence has already been collected over the year
  • Tests (during May) are to confirm the evidence
  • If a child performs differently under the
pressure of testing, the teacher uses their
professional judgement, backed up by their file
    of evidence

6
Key Stage 2 years 3,4,5
  • Government set tests for schools to use if they
    wish
  • Marked in school by us, moderated by us
  • Results reported to you in annual reports
  • Useful for us to track progress, and to predict
    future results

This is likely to change from 2009!
7
Key Stage 2 year 6 (age 11)
  • Taken week beginning May 12th 2008
  • Formal tests, like exams
  • Timetable for testing, sealed envelopes, spot
    checks, marked by paid markers
  • Results arrive in July
  • Results (raw scores and levels) go to secondary
    schools often used for setting
  • Teacher assessment

This may change from 2009!

How do we prepare children in school?
  • SATs test what children have done over the year
in Literacy and Numeracy (and science in year 6)
in contrast to VRQ tests (grammar school
    entrance tests)
  • During Y5 and Y6, past questions are used as part
    of lesson
  • At year 6, we do practice papers, revision
    lessons and booster sessions

10
What are the Key Stage 2 tests like?
  • Reading several passages/stories
  • Questions test literal understanding, but also
    inference and deduction
  • Writing short and long, particular genre
  • Spelling test
  • 2 Maths papers with and without calculators
    (after Y3)
  • Mental maths (taped, from Y3)

fiction and opinion. Questions include some
literal understanding, but a lot of inference and
deduction e.g.

canburst through What does the word burst tell
us about the movement of the lava?
From Disaster Strikes Some people think that
Plinys uncle was a brave but foolish leader.

endangered creatures is being prepared. Your task

can make up the information using your imagination
Longer task (40 minutes) A brother and sister
went on a day out with their family. Tom really

Science
Polly cuts four identical straws into different
lengths. Her friends blow gently into the straws.
The notes from each straw are different. Some
notes are high and some are low. Describe how the
length of the straw affects how high or low the
note is -----------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
---
Tania says Pollys test is not a fair test
because a different person is blowing into each
straw. Why might Pollys test not be a fair test
if different people blow into each
straw? -------------------------------------------

    Authorities, including Gloucestershire, for Key
Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils.

of progress over a key stage.
  • Pupils are tested when ready for a particular
    level, in December or June.
  • Additional individual funded tuition (beyond the
