Title: Matt
1Matt
Matt is a key stage 4 student taking a Foundation
Diploma in hospitality. He lives in an area with
thriving hospitality and tourism sectors, and is
thinking of being employed in the hospitality
industry. He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was
11 so he sometimes has trouble concentrating
and he learns best when he can move around and
does not have to be silent all the time. He is
therefore well suited to active and applied
learning and assignment-based assessment. Matt
has always liked cooking, so he chooses GCSE in
food technology as his ASL, thinking that he
might follow that up as a career.

Work experience
Project
Matt has a seasonal job in the kitchen of a café
at weekends so he has experience of that aspect
of the industry. His teachers advise him to try a
different aspect for his work experience so he
spends two weeks serving rather than preparing
food, dealing with customers and building his
interpersonal skills. While he quite enjoys this,
he still prefers to work in the kitchen and is
beginning to take on more responsibility within
his part-time job. He completes his certificate
in food safety for catering.

Matt wants to carry out a practical project and
has been inspired by watching the Olympics. He is
interested in the sort of diets that athletes eat
to build strength and stamina. He finds out about
some of these and plans a weeks meals for a
long-distance cyclist. He cooks one of the meals
and serves it to his PE and principal learning
teachers. He then makes a presentation to them
about what he has cooked and why.
Progression route By the end of Year 11 Matt is
sure that his future lies in hospitality, and
specifically in catering. He is keen to leave
school, but quite prepared to carry on learning
and progressing within his chosen career. He
finds employment in the kitchen of a large hotel,
a member of a chain with a an in-house training
scheme. There, he can consolidate his skills and
decide if he wants to specialise in any aspect
of the catering industry.
