    democracy since 1985

15
Its Electric!Differences Between Electric Motor
and Turbine
  • Electric Motor
  • Converts electric energy into mechanical energy
  • Use electromagnetism (The magnetic field is
    produced by the electric current)
  • Most are rotary motors (The rotor rotates because
the wires and magnetic field are arranged so that
a torque is developed about the rotor's axis)
  • Hydroelectric Turbine
  • Flowing (or falling) water pushes against the
turbine blades, causing the rotor to spin
  • Potential energy into mechanical
  • Gas Turbine
  • Fuels are burned to create hot gases which go
    through a turbine, which
    spins
  • Wind Turbine
  • The wind turns the rotor of
    the turbine

16
Electricity in Northeast Brazil
  • Hydroelectric power from São Francisco River
  • Fear that hydroelectric resources in Northeast
    Brazil will be exhausted
  • Drought in 2001 hurt hydroelectric production
  • Possibility of converting biomass into
    electricity using advanced gas turbine
    technologies
  • Existing sugarcane residues and future potential
production of wood on dedicated plantations in
the Northeast could be used for biomass
  • Wind energy another substitute
