  • 1852-3 scout surgeon in the civil war
  • had a successful practice in regular medicine
    for years
  • 1864 three of his children died of meningitis
    brother hooked on morphine
  • At that point he decided there had to be
    something better

    flung to the breeze the banner of osteopathy in
    1874
  • traveled around Missouri for 18 years practicing
    and healing patients until the first school was
    founded in 1892 in Kirksville
  • died 1917
