Intro to Aging
  • Biological aging- normal, progressive
irreversible changes that begin at birth and
    continue until death.
  • Psychological/social aging - changes of
    circumstances that occur irregularly and
    differently from person to person.

7
Intro to Aging (cont)
  • Successful aging can be a goal established early
    in life.
  • Many of the changes blamed on aging instead are
due to neglect and abuse of body and mind.
  • Biochemical processes make some loss of function
    inevitable after age 70.

8
Healthy Aging
  • Exercise promotes
  • increase resiliency and suppleness of arteries
  • lower blood pressure
  • healthier cholesterol levels
  • sustained lung capacity
  • weight control

9
Healthy Aging (cont)
  • Exercise promotes
  • maintenance of flexibility, balance, agility,
    reaction time
  • preserved muscle strength
  • protection against ligament injuries
  • protection against osteoporosis

10
Healthy Aging (cont)
  • Exercise promotes
  • protection against Type 2 diabetes
  • increased immune function
  • maintenance of mental agility, flexibility,
    response time, memory, eye-hand coordination

11
Healthy Aging (cont)
  • Exercise also protects against the loss of fluid
intelligence - the ability to find solutions to
new problems. Older people who are fit have been
shown to score better on tests of intelligence
than those who are less fit.

12
Resistance Training in the Elderly
  • Specificity
  • RPE
  • Multi-joint Movements
  • Trunk stabilization
  • Body mechanics

13
Sarcopenias Effects
  • Increased risk for falls (hip fractures)
  • Decreased BMD
  • Decreased active quality lifestyle
  • Decreased ability to minimize adiposity
  • Increased risk of age-related disease
