Title: Hip Injuries in the Athlete: What you should know

1
Hip Injuries in the AthleteWhat you should know
  • Basics of Athletic Training Lab
  • James Maison, BS, ATC, CSCS

2
Muscular Function at the Hip
  • Flexors
  • Adductors
  • Internal rotators
  • Extensors
  • Abductors
  • External rotators

Adductor strains
  • Common mechanism Long strides running, jumping,
    twisting with external rotation
  • Most Common muscle injured Adductor Magnus
    (Why?)
  • Tx Rice, Hip Spica wrap

5
Hamstring Strain
  • Suddenly change directions of contraction
    hurdling, sprinting etc.
  • Quick change from one of knee stabilization to
    extend the hip when running
  • Most commonly strained Hamstring MM. (Why?)
  • Tx RICE, Reverse Hip Spica or Compression Wrap

6
Thigh Contusion
  • Mechanism direct blow, typically from contact
    sports
  • Swelling, inflammation, limited ROM, decreased
    strength
  • Tx RICE, Compression Wrap (with donut pad )
  • (dependent on severity)

Perfusion of blood hematoma (Bruise) between the
muscles. The bruise isnt just near the surface
of the skin!
7
Untreated Thigh Contusion
  • Myositis Ossificans (calcification of a hematoma)
can develop from untreated or poorly managed
cases of repeated severe blows to a muscle
  • Blood and muscle turn to bone, and loss of ROM
    and Strength follow.

?
8
Hip Pointer
  • Contusion to the bony prominence of the Iliac
    Crest
  • History of a direct blow or fall onto the hip
  • Swelling and Inflammation become very obvious
  • Tx RICE, Donut pad secured with hip spica wrap

9
Commercial Hip Braces
  • Used to restrict unwanted motion to prevent
    further injury

10
Commercial Thigh Sleeve
