Why Should You Care About Stress?
  • When you are college student to some degree low
    stress level is a motivator to accomplish a task
    turn in a term paper or study for an exam.
    However, there are instances where high stress
    level can hinder your abilities to work, succeed
    in school, or cause illness.

What is Stress?
  • A response in the body that produces
    physiological and mental reaction which may lead
    to sickness. Stress disrupts your homeostatic
    equilibrium by chaotic reactions and/or
    experiences either real or concocted.

Symptoms of stress
  • Feelings- Anxious, Scare, Irritable, Moody
  • Behaviors- Overeating or no appetite, increase
    use of drugs, accident prone, grinding of teeth,
    impulsive

Symptoms of Stress Continued
  • Physiology- Increase heart beat, tire easily,
    nervous ticks, sleep issues, throat and mouth
    dryness, headaches, neck and low back tension,
    susceptible to illness
  • Causes- Transfer to a new school, pregnancy,
    marriage, divorce, going to college, death in the
    family, financial problems

How To Reduce Stress
  • Turn worry into action
  • Know your reaction to stress
  • Deposit positive thoughts into your mental bank
  • During study time take frequent breaks eat
    brain foods

How To Reduce Stress Continued
  • To avoid procrastination calculate free time
    schedule your study time
  • Relaxation techniques biofeedback or breathing
    exercises
  • Eat healthy daily exercise
  • Find you a mentor, meet with your advisor or
    friend to talk about your worries
  • Set goals prioritize on daily and/or weekly
    basis

  • It can not be eliminated nor prevented
  • We can attack the problem of stress and deal with
    it
  • Stress is necessary for health life

  • Work- Create utilize coping strategies
  • Evaluate- Are your strategies working
  • Rethink- Look at the big picture put your

Case Study
  • Louisa Denbys day began badly She slept through
  • her alarm and had to skip breakfast to catch the
    bus to
  • campus. Then, when she went to the library to
    catch up
  • on the reading she had to do before taking a test
    the
  • next day, the one article she needed was missing.
  • The librarian told her that replacing it would
    take 24 hours.
  • Feeling frustrated, she walked to the computer
    lab to print out the paper she had completed at
    home the night before.
  • The computer wouldn't read her disk. She searched
    for someone to help her, but she was unable to
    find anyone who knew any more abut computers than
    she did. It was only 942 A.M., and Louisa had a
    wracking headache. Apart from that pain, she was
    conscious of only one feeling STRESS
