Course Overview
  • Peanut Butter Jelly Studies encourages students
    to ask some of the most pressing questions of our
    time. With the high increase in PBJ addictions
    in the past twenty years, Peanut Butter Jelly
    is one of the most highly debated, controversial
    issues in our society. Through research,
    observation, service learning, and reflection,
    this course aims to encourage students to apply
    their skills and knowledge to take an active role
    in understanding, preventing, and educating
    others on the most wide-spread addiction since
    Soilant Green.

Community Building ActivityCheck-In
  • Fostering a sense of community, belonging, and
    value in each and every student is key to helping
    make everyones experience the best it can be.
    Taking time to connect with one another is not
    only a way to build community, but it also helps
    foster two University Studies goals
    communication and the diversity of the human
    experience.

Balloon Breaker
  • As an avid icebreaker-hater, I one day came
    across one that I actually enjoyed. It involves
    no name games or memorization, but serves as a
    kind of structured check-in. Also, its easy to
    tweak it so it can related to both particular
    subjects or ideas discussed in class as well as
    University Studies goals.

UNST Goal Review and Practice
  • UNST goals should be consistently reviewed and
    put into practice. They are key skills for
    success both in college and beyond. On a
    different note, when students evaluate UNST
    mentor sessions, they are asked how mentor
    session correlates with UNST goals. Many
    students find this difficult to gauge and it
    makes it easier if you outline this for them and
    put it into practice in every session.

Todays Goal Diversity of the Human Experience
  • Its best to relate each goal to the class
    focus. For PBJ studies, there are many avenues
    that lead to diversity. How do different people
    make PBJs? What effects their preferences?
    Crust or no crust? These are key questions that
    can help us appreciate our differences and share
    our experiences and ideas with others.

Documentary Short
  • This controversial documentary short illustrates
    just how deep the PBJ addiction is. Some of the
    testimonies youre about to see may not be
    suitable for a young audience.

Overview of Main Class
  • Some students feel comfortable asking questions
    in mentor session regarding Main Class, while
    others are not. By splitting students up into
    mini groups and asking everyone to participate in
    answering the texts questions, this opens up new
    avenues for not only clearing things up for
    students, but helping student learn from each
    other.

Tasks For Next Week
  • By creating a checklist of to do charges, it
    not only helps students stay on track, but helps
    hold them accountable for their responsibilities.
