3Think about these questions as you work through
this slide show. At the end you should be able to
answer them!
- How do we design instruction to facilitate
comprehension of our content area materials? - What role should vocabulary instruction play in
content area learning? - How can we use writing to promote learning in
content area classes? - What is my responsibility for helping students
study the material for my class?
4Lets review comprehension is grounded in the
three components of the reading process. Our
goal is to promote reading comprehension in our
classes.

5Rememberthe first 2 parts of the reading process?
- The Reading Task
- Students need clarity about their reading
assignments - They need to know what they are reading.
- They need to know what theyre supposed to be
getting out of what theyre reading. - All of the students need to be on the same
playing field in order to comprehend and learn.
- Text Features
- Writers use a variety of text features and
organizational patterns. - These features and patterns are clues that
students can use to help with the reading. - Knowing how to use these features and clues will
help students get the greatest meaning from their
reading assignments.
6Then, remember that students need us to teach
them specific tools and strategies to help them
understand or comprehend what they are reading!

7The Before Reading Component
- During this part of a lesson the teacher should
try to - Activate the students prior knowledge about the
text or subject - Motivate the students interest in the text or
subject - Give the students a purpose for reading the text
to help them focus their thinking and not become
overwhelmed by all that they have to read.
8Here are some strategies to use before the
students read
- Brainstorming
- Discussion
- Anticipation Guides
- Graphic Organizers
- KWL
9The During Reading Component
- During this part of a lesson the teacher should
try to - Help students make connections between what they
already know about the reading and the new
information that they will be getting - Help students identify the important parts of the
reading assignment so that they dont miss any
critical details
10Here are some strategies to use to guide the
students as they read
- Study Guides
- Herringbone Activity
- WebQuests
- KWL
- Reciprocal Teaching
11The After Reading Component
- During this part of a lesson the teacher should
try to - Create a structure or activity that will help
students clarify their understanding of the new
concepts in the reading - Design some activities that will encourage
students to elaborate on the ideas that they have
been encountering during their reading
12Here are some strategies to help students process
the information after they have read
- A One-Pager Sample
- A 5-Minute Read
- WebQuests
- Discussion
- Student-made Power Point Slides
- Multi-media Presentations
13Strategies for helping students comprehend text
should also address
- Key vocabulary (important for understanding)
- Ways to use writing to learn
- Study skills that the students might need for the
task or assignment.
14What kinds of vocabulary do students need to know?
- Generalcommon words, like the, and, house
- Specializedwords that can have general and
special meanings depending on where they are
used, like matter - Technicalwords that represent specific concepts,
like photosynthesis
15How has traditional vocabulary instruction
worked.
- Teachers introduce words by writing them on the
board or on a handout - If were lucky, some teachers would pronounce the
words - Students would be directed to look up the words
and write definitions - Sometimes students would have to use the word in
a sentence.
16So whats wrong with this???
- First of allits boring to do this kind of
activity! - Students only get a limited view of the word
meanings and their relationships. - Students have only a few contacts with the words.
- It doesnt encourage them to make connections by
using their prior knowledge!
17What you should do is
- Identify the targeted words.
- Teach about the words before your students read
their books or other materials. - Reinforce the words throughout your unit of study
so students really learn them!
18Here are some ways to teach vocabulary
- Discussion
- Semantic Feature Analysis
- Word Maps
- Word Sorts
- Graphic Organizers
- Context Clues
- Concept of Definition Map
19What about using writing to learn?
- Using writing in the classroom is one way of
helping students clarify their thinking about
what they are learning. - Writing can be done for different purposes.
- Writing can be used in all subjects.
Check out the 2 links on how to use writing to
learn
20Nowabout those study skills
Study skills refer to using reading, writing and
thinking strategies to learn material for a
class.
Study strategies are plans for gathering,
evaluating and problem solving to help students
learn and remember material for a class.
21To really help your students with their
studyingconsider the following
- Determine what skills your students will need to
succeed in your class. - Then find out if they have these kind of skills.
- If they dont have some or any of the skills,
then you have to find a way to teach them the
skills.
22Here are some ways to teach your students study
skill and strategies
- Use Graphic Organizers
- Show them how to take notes
- Teach them how to use a study system, like SQ3R
- Teach them how to skim a piece of text.
23Nowcan you answer these questions? If not, go
back and continue reading!
- How do we design instruction to facilitate
