  • Great Britain had the most powerful navy in the
    world.
  • British soldiers were highly disciplined and
    well-trained
  • The soldiers had uniforms and many weapons
  • The British could hire mercenaries to fight for
    them
  • The war was costly to fight because it was across
    the ocean
  • The British people did not like paying taxes for
    the war
  • The colonists had no army or navy at first
  • Most colonists preferred the local militia to the
    army
  • There were no uniforms, few weapons, no pay or
    food
  • Many soldiers quit the army
  • Americans knew the land
  • They had the will to keep fighting

Battle of Trenton December 25,1776 George
Washington
  • Washington knew that the British would not fight
    again until the spring so he planned a surprise
    attack.
  • At night on Christmas day his and his troops
    crossed the Delaware river into New Jersey.
  • The next morning they surprised the Hessians and
    took more than 900 prisoners.
  • British troops advanced toward Trenton to retake
    it.Washingtons troops silently marched past
    British forces.
  • Princeton in a brilliant victory over they
    took the red coats.

Battle for PhiladelphiaSeptember,1777
  • By spring ,1777, Washington received weapons from
    France and rebuilt his army. British General Howe
    wanted to take the patriots capital,
    Philadelphia.
  • Washington placed his troops between Philadelphia
    and Howes forces when they were marching toward
    Chesapeake Bay.
  • The British army swung around the Continental
    Army and attacked from behind.The patriots had to
    retreat.
  • The British took Philadelphia on September 26.
    The Continental Congress fled to York,
    Pennsylvania.

    Forge which is near Philadelphia.
  • Friedrich Von Steuben was a solider from the
    German state of Prussia.
  • Friedrich Von Steuben helped train Washingtons
    troops in fighting methods that the Europeans
    were using.
  • Also, he taught Washingtons troops to be on time
    and always to keep clean.

  • Benedict Arnold was the chief when he battled in
    Freeman's Farm
  • Burgoyne attacked and that time Benedict Arnold
    was in charge and brought the patriots to victory
    .
  • In 1780, Washington gave Arnold a command of a
    key fort in New York and told the British.Then
    when the patriots found out he escaped and join
    British.Benedict Arnold was a traitor to the
    patriots in the American Revolution.

  • George Rogers Clark decided to try real hard to
    drive out the British from the Ohio River Valley.
  • His men helped him to drive the British out, so
    they can go back to Fort Vincennes. The British
    did go back to Fort Vincennes.
  • Clark captured several forts including Fort
    Vincennes.
  • George got his men to march to the fort wading
    waist-deep and through icy swamp land. Also
    George tricked the British that he had a large
    army.

  • The British destroyed the Bonhomme Richard, which
    was Captain John Paul Jones battleship with
    cannon balls. So the battleship was left badly
    damaged.
  • When Captain John was ready to surrender he
    yelled I have not yet began to fight
  • John Paul Jones was by Englands coast trying to
    destroy the British ships.
  • Fun fact
  • To lift the colonists sprits, they often quoted
    the heroes like John Paul Jones. Their favorite
    song they always sang is Yankee Doodle.

  • Francis Marion was a commander who was the
    patriot in charge of this battle.
  • This event happened in 1780.
  • The location of this event was Charles town,
    South Carolina.
  • Francis Marion won the battle because General
    Nathaniel Greene got beaten by, who was against
    him.
  • Francis Marion was a revolutionary war commander
    who fought the British.

  • He helped defeat the British general, Cornwallis,
