Title: Toxicity Sensing Device for Inhaled Materials

1
Toxicity Sensing Device for Inhaled Materials
  • Biochemical Engineering Journal
  • M. Riley, K. Jordan, M. Cox

2
Introduction
  • Currently there is no portable way to detect
    toxicity in the air.
  • Device uses cells to measure metabolic
    activities.
  • Device does not identify specific toxin.

3
Procedure
  • Monolayer of cells on the bottom of device.
  • Lung cells are used.
  • Rat is the source of cells.
  • Cells came from culture.

4
  • Zink is used as the toxin.
  • The device exposes cells for one hour.

5
  • Cell metabolism measured by the utilization of
    WST-1 dye.
  • The healthier the cell, the more dye utilized in
    metabolism.
  • The more dye utilized the greater the color
    change. (orange to red)

6
  • Color change detected by photometric sensor.
  • Orange to red corresponds to blue light absorbed.
  • Sensor detects blue light that is absorbed.
  • Dye is sensitive to light. Exposure time and
light intensity was kept to a minimum.
  • Utilization of dye measured in sensor output
    voltage (mV).

7
Results
  • Exposure to toxins decreased amount of cell
    metabolism and metabolic rate.

Critique
  • Not very clear on effects of non standard
    conditions.
  • Not very clear on how to make this device
    portable and efficient.
