The British Strategy
  • Americans attempted to conquer Canada in
    1776-that failed.
  • What it DID do was split the British
    forces-between Canada and the United States.
  • General John Burgoyne planned a 3 prong attack
    against the American.-divide the colonies along
    the line of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River.
  • Gen. Howe would move up the Hudson River from
    NYC.
  • Burgoynes Army would move south from Montreal.
  • British forces under Barry St. Leger would
    invade by Lake Ontario and the Mohawk River.

    States wanted open support against the British
    from the French.
  • Benjamin Franklin went over to France as an
    envoy-or delegated representative.
  • He was very popular.
  • The French were not willing to help unless there
    was a chance the Americans could win.

Saratoga was the VICTORY!
  • 1778-France signed a treaty with the United
    Statesthey were allies now.
  • Now they can get more supplies, money, French
    troops and a Navy.
  • Other allies include-Spain, the Netherlands, help
    from some Germans and some Polish.
