What is EDDMapS?
  • Electronic EDRR tool (e-mail alerts)
  • State/County Distribution Maps
  • Google Maps Interface for Point Distribution
  • Large Scale Cooperative Management of New
    Invasive Species
  • One database for local and national data
  • Custom Queries and Reports

4
Why was it developed?
  • To get a more accurate picture of the
distribution of invasive species across the South
  • Compilation of existing data
  • Creation of new data

5
State EPPCs Role
  • System and interface developed by UGA-Bugwood
    Network for SE-EPPC
  • Provided to state EPPCs for use
  • State EPPC
  • Train users
  • Verifying data
  • Encourage data collection within state

6
Uses of Data
  • More complete distribution data
  • Justification of problem
  • Identification of leading edge of ranges
  • Early detection
  • Refinement of lists and priorities

7
What is already out there?
  • Distribution data already exist at varying
    scales, resolutions, availability, and
    completeness
  • IPANE project in New England
  • IPAMS project in Mississippi
  • NBII
  • USDA-PLANTS
  • Herbarium records

8
Existing Data Sets
  • Lots of data already out there
  • Research
  • Herbaria
  • Natural heritage programs
  • Stored in scattered locations
  • In different formats
  • Not easily available

9
PLANTS Cooperation
  • Used PLANTS county distribution data as a
    starting point
  • Fill in the holes
  • Collect point data as well
  • Share data back with PLANTS

10
Opportunities for Surveys
  • Existing SE-EPPC membership expertise
  • Networking with others
  • Target Species on State EPPC Lists

11
Levels of Data
  • County-level data
  • Point data
  • Unverified
  • Verified
  • Photo-verified
  • Herbarium voucher
  • Expert-verified
  • Literature-verified

12
Volunteers Role
  • Include their existing data
  • Collect and submit new data

13
Electronic Early Detection System
  • Each state has a designated reviewer
  • Responsible for verifying all data entered in
    that state
  • Responsible for notifying the appropriate people
when a EDRR species is reported
  • Each state can designate EDRR species that
    automatically are flagged
  • Email sent to designated persons within the state
when a EDRR species is reported
  • State EDRR Committees

14
