Title: FAA Projects for FY0607

1
FAA Projects for FY-06/07
  • UCB AACE Cooperative Agreement
  • Metals/composite material models and ballistic
    testing
  • GWU Two Cooperative Agreements
  • Support LSDYNA Aerospace Quality Control work
  • Metals/fabric/composite material models
  • LSDYNA Training

2
FAA Projects for FY-06/07
  • OSU Aluminum and Titanium Static and
    High-Strain Rate Testing
  • ASU Fabric modeling on Kevlar and Zylon
  • NASA-GRC Collaborative effort in which FAA is
supplying materials. We also are getting two
used cameras from NASA in which we can lend to
    universities

3
06/07 TESTING PLANS
  • OSU
  • Static and high strain rate material tests
  • ASU
  • Medium strain rate material tests
  • NASA-GRC
  • Ballistic testing (cylindrical projectile)
  • strain gage instrumentation
  • Stress field calculations
  • UCB (aluminum only)
  • Ballistic testing (cylindrical projectile with
    diff. tips)
  • Preliminary tests to size projectile
  • Tests to determine tip shape results

4
So what is different from previous tests?
  • Same lots of materials for all tests and
    facilities
  • Ballistic limits in the 600-900 ft/sec range
  • Strain gaging of targets
  • New modeling methods are requiring new material
    tests

5
Initial Materials
  • Ti-6Al-4V
  • 0.080 in
  • 0.140 in
  • 0.25 in
  • Al 2024-T3/T351
  • 0.125 in (T3)
  • 0.25 in (T351)
  • 0.50 in (T351)

6
UCB Ballistic Test Thoughts
  • Phase 1- Short Term
  • Use existing test facility configuration to
conduct preliminary tests to support future NASA
    and UCB testing
  • Use existing 2024 aluminum material(NASA/UCB)
  • Target Thickness TBD
  • Test conditions will build on previous NASA tests
    and modeling
  • Phase 2- Improve facility with new barrel,
    upgraded camera, etc.

7
UCB Ballistic Test Thoughts
  • Phase 3- Ballistic testing with different tip
    profiles
  • 0.125 thick
  • 0250 thick

8
Material Models being developed for Aluminum and
Titanium
  • GWU/NASA-
  • Kelly Carney, Paul DuBois, Murat, Steve
  • Data driven stress strain curves incorporated int
    LSDYNA material model 24
  • GWU / Boeing
  • Baseline Johnson-Cook comparisons
  • UCB-
  • Simplified material model (Tarek Zohdi/ David
    Powell)
  • EMMI Model (George Johnson)

9
How do we share results?
  • Possibly a NASA web site?
  • Periodic phone calls / Web X?
  • Joint Meetings?
  • Possibly as part of LSDYNA reviews?
