Course Information
  • Provides an orientation to the teaching
    profession in Virginia, including historical
    perspectives, current issues, and future trends
    in education on the national and state levels.
  • Emphasizes information about teacher licensure
    examinations, steps to certification, teacher
    preparation and induction programs, and attention
    to critical shortage areas in Virginia.
  • Includes supervised field placement (recommended
    40 clock hours) in a K-12 school.
  • Prerequisite Successful completion of 24 credits
    of transfer courses or instructor approval.

    Web at least twice weekly during the course.
    Access to MS Office is recommended.

  • Requires keyboarding, computer experience,
    installing software and communicating via e-mail,
    including attachments Owning your own computer
    is recommended.

Dates to Remember
  • All College OrientationSaturday, August 19, 900
    am to 1130 on both campuses.
  • Add/drop is September 1
  • Withdrawal deadline is October 28.
  • Classes end December 11.

Instructional Methods
  • Students will participate in group sessions
    through a hybrid (online and face-to-face)
    delivery system. Students must have access to
    the World Wide Web and the RCC Blackboard
    Classroom.
  • Students are required to attend mandatory
    sessions during the semester to deliver
    presentations, take tests, and participate in
    group activities and discussions.
  • Students will participate in a 40-hour field
    placement as described in the course field
    placement manual.

Field Placement--Required
  • All students must be approved by hosting school
    divisionthis may include a background check,
    fingerprinting,TB test, and/or school board
    approval.
  • EDU 200 students will work with a supervising
    teacher for forty hours during school
    hoursranging from observation to teaching
    activities.

Sample Course Objectives
  • Determine the requirement and submit paperwork
    for a criminal background check for the school
    system in which field placement will be
    conducted.
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor when in the
    field.
  • Create a list reviewing the knowledge, attitudes
    and skills needed to become a good teacher.
  • Compare and contrast the reasons people choose to
    become teachers and the rewards and benefits that
    a career in teaching affords.
  • Sequence the steps to becoming a qualified
    classroom teacher.

Getting Started with Assignments
  • After August 19, you will have access to the EDU
    200-63 Blackboard classroom.
  • Print the syllabus, visit all areas of
    Blackboard, and follow directions under
    Announcements.
  • Be sure to complete the first activity within
    three days of the beginning of the semester.

  • In order to truly improve, we must evaluate the
    class. Please complete your course evaluation
    when posted in Blackboard near the end of the
    semester.
