Title: Wireless Policy draft refer to the draft wireless policy handout

1
Wireless Policy (draft) (refer to the draft
wireless policy handout)
  • Key Elements
  • Provide a reliable wireless networking service
  • Maintain the integrity of the UM network
  • Maintain the security of the network
  • Comply with state audit requirements

2
Wireless Policy (draft)
  • Achieving these elements
  • Unlicensed radio frequency (RF) bands of 2.4 GHz
and 5 GHz will need to be managed appropriately
    to offer reliable service.
  • OIT will be responsible for managing all wireless
access to the UM network and radio frequencies
    used for communications.
  • Accommodations will be made for research,
academic and administrative uses. OIT will
provide requirements for proper implementation of
such access so that the integrity and security of
    the UM network is preserved.

3
Wireless Policy Corollary Removing Rogue Access
Points (draft)
  • Key Elements
  • Access provided to the UM network via non-OIT
supported access points and via access points
that have not received an exception is in
    violation of the wireless policy.
  • A process will be defined for how rogue APs
    will be handled -
  • As buildings are refreshed, locate access points
    (APs)
  • Identify owner of rogue AP and determine if it is
related to research related work or other
  • If research related, then make accommodations if
other, then understand the need for the AP and
deal accordingly (APs may be installed as part of
network refresh or consult with department for
    funding of AP installation)
