IVC Course AdaptationMODULE 3 IVC COURSE
DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • Learning Objectives for MODULE 3 are the
    following
  • Describe the instructional design process and the
importance of using a lesson plan and an advanced
    syllabus in an IVC course.
  • Identify the components of the IVC lesson plan
    and advanced syllabus.
  • Describe the guidelines for developing an IVC
    lesson plan and advanced syllabus.
  • Identify the importance of interactivity for an
IVC class to a remote site location
  • Retrieve relevant instructional information from
the IVC web site and print available IVC
instructional templates (e.g. online IVC Syllabus
    Guidelines and Lesson Planning Guide)
  • Plan an IVC course

DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • Planning and the Instructional Design Process
  • The Instructional Design ADDIE Model is a good
structure to follow not only for new course
development, but also for course adaptation.
    ADDIE stands for the following
  • A. Analyze and assess the current course (if a
course conversion) and the students needs.
Review existing course content and ask yourself
how the course material can be presented in a
    visual or auditory manner
  • D. Design and Develop a new course using the
IVC lesson plan and advanced syllabus
recommendations in this module. Adapt or develop
    materials.
  • I. Implement the IVC course. Present and
deliver the material (see the Presentation
    Techniques and Presentation Materials module)
  • E. Evaluate the course material on an on-going
basis (see IVC Course Delivery and Evaluation
    module)

DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • Lesson Plan Guidelines
  • Lesson plans provide a framework for an
instructor. Planned activities and exercises are
more effective and can greatly enhance the
productivity of a class. A lesson plan template
    is available athttp//irt.austincc.edu/ivc/desig
    n/lessonPlan.htm
  • Lesson plans are expected to follow goals and
objectives developed for the course and the
pacing schedule established in the advanced
    syllabus.
  • Each class lesson plan should include three
    sections
  • Display of the day's objectives to students.
  • Body of the presentation.
  • Reviewing the day's work.
  • Lesson Plan format is less important than the
content. As long as instructors show that they
have a solid outline for the presentation and
that appropriate activities and enhancements are
in place to meet the objectives, they are likely
to succeed in their IVC presentation.

DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • Lesson Plan Guidelines (CONT.)
  • It is recommended to put the outline of the
lesson plan in a table or grid format with the
following headings from left to right
  • Lesson outline
  • Activities / Exercises / Audio/Visual materials
  • Evaluation (i.e. type of assessment you will give
students to determine if they understood the
concepts discussed (i.e. QA, Quiz, group
    discussions, etc.)
  • Time
  • For more information on the organization and
structure of an IVC lesson plan, go to
    http//irt.austincc.edu/ivc/design/lessonPlan.htm
  • As in any learning process, initial lesson plans
may include more detail than later ones, when the
instructor feels more "natural" using the
equipment and communicating with IVC students.

IVC Course AdaptationMODULE 3 IVC COURSE
DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • Lesson Plan Guidelines (cont.)
  • When designing lesson plans, IVC instructors must
utilize a reasonable variety of visual
enhancements and instructional methods to help
IVC students connect with concepts presented in
    the course.
  • Visuals can include print-based items, computer
presentations, videos, web pages, CD-ROM or any
other appropriate means of helping students "see"
    the concept.

DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • Advanced Syllabus Guidelines
  • As mentioned earlier in this module, in addition
to a Lesson Plan, another important element when
planning and designing your adapted IVC course,
is an Advanced Syllabus. An advanced syllabus
needs to contain information that is unique to an
    IVC class.
  • The more detailed and thorough the IVC class
syllabus, the better for both IVC instructors and
    students.
  • It is recommended to divide the syllabus in at
    least 3 sections
  • Administrative Information
  • Technical Information
  • Support Information

DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • IVC Advanced Syllabus
  • 1. Administrative Information
  • Class Lengths, Days and Times
  • Contact information the Instructor/Office Hours
    (including facilitator info.)
  • Alternative Contact Methods and Information.
(i.e. One contact option should provide
information on how to make contact through
    intercampus mail, email, etc.)
  • On-line delivery (Blackboard) and support access
    information
  • Attendance and Make-up Policies
  • Web site URL Links and reference information. If
the instructor or course has a web site or a
Blackboard component, include the URL or access
information in the syllabus. Be sure and let the
students know if this is one of ways
instructional materials will be distributed to
the class. Make sure the students understand how
and when it will be posted.

DESIGN ADVANCED SYLLABUS LESSON PLAN
  • IVC Advanced Syllabus
  • 1. Administrative Information
  • Office Hours. If planning on holding synchronous
or virtual "office hours," post those days and
hours on the syllabus. If that information will
change from week to week, that information can be
posted on the instructor's web site or within Bb.
  • Instructor Location. Let the students know your
class schedule. Will you alternate sites? If so,
when will you be at the Remote site location
  • Access to course materials (i.e. if Bb will be
part of the class, do students know how to access
    it?)
  • Supplementary materials, reference materials
    outside learning opportunities
  • Class Assignments, Labs, Activities and Projects
  • Testing, Grading, Assessment and Evaluation
    Policies

  • 2. Technical Information
  • Introduce IVC Technology
  • Include information to help the student become
familiar with the technology in the room and let
them know how you expect them to interact with
the technology. Inform them the technology is
there to help them communicate with you and other
students. Also include info on IVC room
    etiquette.
  • Problems with IVC technology
  • Let students know they must inform you when they
can't see or hear you. If they can't contact you,
instruct them to call the Video Help Desk.
  • Push to Talk Microphones
  • Have information about how to operate the Push to
Talk Microphones and includes photos on how to
operate them. This is one of the most difficult
things for students to remember to do.
  • Speaker Phone
  • If you are unable to use interactive video, let
your student know that you will be using the
speaker phone to conduct the class. While they
may not be able to see you, they will be able to
hear you and the class may continue.

  • 3. Support Services
  • Provide your students with a list of services
    such as
  • Campus Libraries
  • open access Computer Centers
  • Tutoring/Learning Labs
  • Various ACC and DL student support services.
