3
Questions of Interest
  • 1. MEASURE What does online reading
comprehension look like and how can we begin to
    measure this?
  • 2. ANALYZE Are there ways to make use of
research data to directly inform classroom
    instruction?
  • 3. TEACH How might teachers use real-time data
    recordings to provide explicit strategy
    instruction?

4
New ways of capturing process data with Camtasia
Recordings
  • Full motion real-time screen recordings
  • Record auditory think-alouds
  • Cursor highlights
  • Play back to analyze data
  • Play back and review process and strategies with
    students.

5
What are the elements of strategic online
reading comprehension?
  • Skills, strategies, and dispositions required to
use and adapt to rapidly changing information and
    communication technologies (ICT) while
  • identifying important problems,
  • locating information,
  • critically evaluating the information,
  • synthesizing information, and then
  • communicating the solutions to others.

Uncovering and addressing misconceptions
  • How do you know its accurate and reliable?
  • lots of details plenty of pictures a contact us
button why would they lie to kids?
  • Which site is the best?
  • Relevant, readable, and interesting
  • VERSUS
  • Relevant, accurate, trustworthy objective

Research Into Practice
What are the challenges?
What can I teach?
  • Exploring the power of the Internet asking
    questions that interest you.
  • Previewing websites
  • Evaluating search results
  • Evaluating validity, reliability,
    objectivity of information
  • Sorting, organizing, and synthesizing (w/out
    plagiarizing)
  • Asking Questions
  • What would I like to know more about?
  • Locating
  • Where do I read first?
  • Evaluating
  • Which link is most useful?
  • How do I know its true?
  • Synthesizing and Communicating
  • How do I come up with an original idea?

20
How might teachers use real-time recordings to
provide explicit strategy instruction?
21
1. Teacher-led strategy dialogue
  • Teachers preview recordings to note strengths and
    challenges.
  • Students revisit Camtasia recordings alongside a
teacher and explain the strategies they used.
  • After students locate a difficult event, the
teacher can guide the student to explore an
    alternative strategy.
  • Example 5145 - 5234 - 5354

2. Student-led strategy dialogue
  • Students revisit Camtasia recordings and reflect
    individually or in small groups.
  • They play back videos for the group to hear and
learn from or they provide small group
reflections that can be saved as evidence of
    learning and strategy use.

24
Student-led strategy dialogue
  • Purpose of Think-aloud Two friends who have
never used the Internet have asked you to teach
them about the online reading strategies you use
    and why.
  • Search Task Compare the homes of two different
groups of Native Americans who lived in different
    regions of the United States.

25
Student-led strategy lesson
26
3. Online strategy portfolios
27
4. Contexts that foster the use of
Internet meta-language
  • How do we talk about the new online technologies
and resources that continue to emerge?
  • website, homepage, address bar, search bar,
search engine, directories, author vs. webmaster
vs. sponsor, pop-up menu, wikis, blogs, podcasts,
    tags
  • Playing back the video provides a common context
and encourages the use of these terms to describe
what they are doing, where they are going, and
    how they are getting there.
