1
Web Accessibility
  • Short version

2
Intro to ADA Compliance
  • ADA is mandatory for all UofL websites in order
to assist persons with disabilities, such as
individuals with visual and auditory impairment.
  • For tutorials and helpful websites, visit

Quick Tips
  • When creating new sites in CMS (Plone) the site
will be automatically ADA compliant. It is the
content that needs to be checked.
  • When referring to a link within text, make sure
to give it a descriptive title, not just click
    here.

5
Adding Image
  • Adding a title creates a tag in Plone for your
image. Make sure it is a short description of
    the actual photo.
  • i.e. Clock Tower
  • Should be .jpg or .gif

6
Adding Image
  • You can also edit the tag title when adding your
image on your page, under text equivalent.
Make sure you double check size (mini is best.)

7
Creating Short Name
  • When you title a new page, Plone automatically
creates your URL name from that title.
  • i.e. Title is Welcome to the University of
    Louisville. The link becomes
  • http//louisville.edu/hr/employment/ada/welcome-to
    -the-university-of-louisville.html

8
Creating Short Name
  • To change the URL name, go to contents.
  • Check the page you wish to update and select
    rename.

9
Creating Short Name
  • Before
  • After (Title can stay same)

10
Creating Short Name
  • REMINDER You must manually update any links to
the pages where you have changed the short name.
  • It is best to shorten the name as soon as you
create it. Then when you link to it in the
future, it will always be correct.

11
Making Documents Compliant
  • Having a document as a PDF is preferred.
  • Before converting Word or Excel documents to PDF,
you can make sure document is ADA compliant.
  • i.e. If your document has images, add tags.

12

    Type alternative (tag) text.
  • Make the tag a short description of the image.

13
Making PDF Compliant
  • When creating a PDF there are a few steps you
need to take to make sure it is ADA Compliant.

    Start Checking

14
Making PDF Compliant
  • The results will pop up. If you need to make
    changes, it will list them.
  • Click OK to get details of how to make necessary
    changes.

15
Making PDF Compliant
  • A common change needed is to set a language.
  • File
  • Properties
  • Advanced Tab
  • Set language field

16
Making PDF Compliant
  • Once you have made all the changes, run the Full
    System check again.
  • It should say The checker found no problems in
this document when you have fixed everything.

(XLS) etc. at the end of the link to identify
what kind of document the link leads to.
