What is a cosmic ray telescope and what is it
going to be used for

• Study of galactic cosmic ray showers detection
  of muons
• Introduce electronics to high schools
• Gate for a hybrid tube

Why do we need muons?

• Move with a relativistic speed
• Provide standard signal
• Produced in the upper atmosphere (typically 15
  km)
• Lose 2 GeV to ionization
• Mean energy at the ground 4GeV
• Interact electromagnetically less than electrons

What do we need ?

• Counter detects muons (cosmic rays)
• Photomultiplier tube converts light into
  electrical signal
• High voltage generates potential difference in
  PMT
• Logic requires two things to be true to
  give us a signal
• Scaler and Timer measurement of rates
• QVT discriminator
• - measures charge
• - transfer of analog signal into a
  ditital one
• - gate
