I. Difficult sentences
  • 1.From the time a child is born, he or she is
expected to meet stereotypes-boys are portrayed
as boisterous and disruptive girls conform to
the expectations when they are sweet and docile.
  • From the time a child is born, he or she is
supposed to satisfy fixed sets of conventional
expectationsboys are described as lively, noisy
and troublesome girls live up to the
expectations if they are gentle, kind, lovely,
    quiet and obedient.

14
  • 2.Their social roles and identity are
    predetermined by their permanent identifying
    attribute sex.
  • Their social roles and identity are fixed or
determined unchangeably from the very beginning
(in advance) by their eternal natural quality
    which shows their sex category.
  • 3.  Males are the producers of cool reasoning and
    capable of being leaders.
  • Males have the ability to reason calmly and form
opinions based on logical reasoning so that they
possess the capability of becoming leaders.

15
  • 4. However, no one feels sure that certain
natural differences that exist between man and
woman are relevant to the distinctions between
    male and female excellence
  • Nevertheless, nobody fees sure that certain
biological differences between man and woman are
related to differences between excellent men and
    excellent women.

16
  • 5. Such uncertainty denotes a rejection of such
concepts as gender appropriate and stereotyped
sex roles which are only social norms invented
by man, imposed on man, but rest their logic
    nowhere.
  • This kind of uncertainty indicates a refusal to
accept such concepts as gender appropriate and
stereotyped sex roles which are only socially
accepted standards artificially created by man
human beings are forced to accept and comply with
    such artificially established standards, which
are not reasonable at all, or which have no
    logical base anywhere.

17
  • 6. The grounds on which the idea of single sex
schools might be defended are cut from under our
    feet.
  • This is a metaphorical sentence with an implied
metaphor. It may be paraphrased as
  • The foundation on which the idea of single sex
schools is based or might be protected is
    destroyed. Or
  • The argument of single sex schools might be
    protected is groundless.

18
  • 7. But at a very early stage, a single-sex school
kills the possibility for a vigorous youth to
grow and develop into full stature.
  • But at a very early stage, a single-sex school
deprives a strong, active and energetic youth of
his or her likelihood to develop fully and grow
    mature.

19
  • 8.but they become two parallels, always apart,
    never meet.
  • This is a vivid metaphorical sentence. Both
groups of boys and girls are compared to two
parallel lines, which are always apart from each
    other and never meet.
  • Figuratively, it means that both groups are
separated from and never come in direct contact
    with each other.

20
  • 9. May I venture to suggest that one day when
male and female is a reproductive category only,
but no longer central to our identity and to the
understanding of ourselves and others, I will
call that A GENDER FREE SOCIETY, A HEALTHY
    SOCIETY.

21
  • Explanation
  • May I take the risk to suggest that one day when
male and female are only biologically
differentiated, but no longer play an important
part in establishing our identity and in
understanding ourselves and others, I will call
that a society without distinction of sex, a
    wholesome society.

    essay?
  • The single sex schools can not realize the aim of
education while coeducation is the best way to
    educate young people.

23
  • 2. What is the writers explanation of
    coeducation?Coeducation is the most desirable
form of education. Coeducation has survived as
the best way to educate young people. It is an
    integrated community where students are
instructed without distinction of sex. They are
given the opportunity to know each other and
compete with each other. Girls can ask questions,
    protest and challenge teachers.

24
  • Boys can be seen sitting quietly, listening to
woman speakers. With the full spectrum of
experience offered, life is an open possibility
for man as well as woman. Everyone is anxious to
