Background

• The need for more Pacific alcohol resources to
  reflect the needs of the community
• Following the gaps and recommendations from the
  needs analysis conducted last year, ALAC
  commissioned the development of a Pacific
  Community Education Toolkit

Aims

• The aim was to develop an appropriate basic
  education and training package to promote safe
  and responsible drinking and to reduce
  alcohol-related harms in Pacific communities
  through the use of language and culture.
• To be driven by the Pacific community, utilizing
  education materials and packages which raise the
  awareness of alcohol-related harms.
• To provide a resource for Pacific community
  workers to promote alcohol related harms in
  their communities.

Stage One Needs Analysis

• The Needs Analysis Alcohol-Related project
  identified keys areas raised by Pacific
  practitioners in the field. Gaps were identified
  and recommendations made
• .
• Many educators felt that there are many providers
  and individuals out there that do their own thing
  and providing inaccurate information about
  alcohol to the community. Delivering a
  consistent message is needed for our Pacific
  community. The quality of the information
  currently available is highly dependent on the
  individual who is providing and explaining this
  information to the community.
• A community education programme is required for
  Pacific communities. It should be in Pacific
  languages and delivered in Pacific environments.

Stage two Pacific focus groups

• 7 focus groups were conducted last year including
  1 youth focus groups.
• 6 Pacific facilitators in 6 languages
• Facilitators received a pack with information and
  questions for their group. Numbers ranged from 7
  to 14 in each group

What did our communities want in our toolkit?

• Hard-hitting messages
• Toolkit to be delivered in bi-lingual languages
  both ethnic specific and English. Every focus
  group believed this as the best approach.
•  Toolkit to include DVDs/CDs and both written and
  visual. To use visual resources that is
  meaningful to Pacific concepts
•  The toolkit to include a spiritual aspect. It
  was widely discussed in all the focus groups of
  the need to have a Christian based approach in
  the delivery of the toolkit.
• Real life stories to be used to tell powerful and
  meaningful messages. Personal testimonies can
  have real impacts on people from real life
  experiences
• Kava to be addressed. Kava is a traditional
  drink but is subject to abuse as much as alcohol
  if not more. Kava is not considered alcohol nor
  does it have the same effect on a person but a
  lot of problems that stem from alcohol abuse are
  the same with kava drinking

• Power points and templates on a flash drive
• Participants handouts/handbook
• Pacific Community Education Toolkit manual
• Standard drinks exercise
• Interactive exercises
• User guide
• Current Pacific resources brochures etc.

Who can use it?

• Community workers Pacific and non-Pacific
• Public Health workforce
• Health promotion workers
• Mental Health workers
• Pacific educators
• Community leaders

How can it be used?

• Designed for community workers to undertake a
  train the trainers workshop initially
• The toolkit can be pruned/added/adapted to fit
  their workplace in the community
• This toolkit is an educational starting base for
  alcohol related harm
• The toolkit will be used primarily by Pacific
  educators to communicate with Pacific
  communities, raising the awareness of
  alcohol-related harms.
• It can be translated into Pacific languages and
  delivered in within a cultural framework with
  appropriate language and culture
• As a reference for Pacific community educators
• Educators can run programs in their own
  communities using the toolkit

Train the Trainer workshops

• Aimed at training community workers on how to use
  the toolkit
• A full 1 day workshop
• Targeting PHOs, Mental Health Providers, Social
  Services, Church leaders, community leaders,
  etc..
• User guide
