INTRODUCTORY BACKGROUND OF EWP
  • EWP formed in the year 2002 to
  • Assist in roles identification of each
    stakeholder\ individual in wastes management
  • To supplement the work of the council
  • To help promote acceptable refuse handling
    practices.
  • Assist in salvage potential (waste recycling)
    e.g. fish wastes used as animal feed.
  • Enable joint planning and resource management for
    efficiency in solid waste management among other
    activities

EWP PARTNERSHIP STRUCTURE IN HOMABAY TOWN
  • EWP supplements the work being done by HBMC in
    refuse collection
  • To achieve this,EWP has employed an all-inclusive
    approach viz
  • HMBC is the lead partner in refuse management
  • receives support from public health office,
    physical planner, NEMA through environment
    officer, probation, Forrest office, Provincial
    administration and Police
  • Partner with key stakeholders such as the local
    community and the business fraternity within the
    CBD of Homa Bay town

EWP PARTNERSHIP STRATEGY
  • Work closely with key partners such as the local
    authority
  • Involve the targeted community members within the
    Central Business District within Homa Bay.
  • Involve key government departments with direct
    relation to input in terms of resource
    mobilization i.e. Probation Department, the
    Public Health Department e.t.c
  • Make use of local resources to sustain the Waste
    management Campaign

  • ADVOCACY
  • CITIZENS TO KNOW THEIR OBLIGATIONS,ROLES AND
    RESPONSIBILITY
  • MAKE REFUSE MANAGEMENT A DEMAND DRIVEN ACTIVITY
  • HAVE JOINT CLEAN-UP EXERCISES
  • DIFFERENT GROUPS TO BE GIVEN CLEANING TASKS E.G
    HOSPITAL YOUTH GROUP WHO CLEAN AROUND THE
    HOSPITAL
  • JOINT PLANNING
  • CITIZENS CHECKS AND BALANCES TO BE PUT IN PLACE
  • MOBILIZATION AND SENSITIZATION THROUGH I.E.C
  • NOTE All the above activities are carried
    through partnership with Homa Bay Municipal
    Council, Public Health Environment Office and
    other stake holders and now we are welcoming
    UN-HABITAT aboard.

  • Lack of information dissemination to the
    community.
  • 2. Need for participatory Hygiene and Health
    Transformation.
  • 3. Need for effective policy on Waste
    Management.

CHALLENGES IN PARTNERSHIP
  • Poor of awareness on waste management by the
    community members who are the source of refuse
  • Poor enforcement of the existing legal
    instruments by the municipal authority
  • Lack of necessary resources to put in place a
    strong partnership
  • Suspicion and lack of understanding among key
    partners
  • Lack of a clear policy on partnership
  • Poor arrangements on implementation of the
    activities under partnership
