9DA Testing, For a Safe Work
Environment.
10The Benefit
11Drug and Alcohol Testing
- Three testing requirements
- Pre site access
- Testing for cause
- Post incident
12Objectives
- The pre-site access testing has two objectives
- To send a message about the importance of a drug
and alcohol free environment
13Objectives
- The pre-site access testing has two objectives
- To send a message about the importance of a drug
and alcohol free environment - To deselect those individuals who test positive
during a preplanned DA test.
14Program Overview
- Any contractor who is new to site, or has been
off site for more than 90 days, must pass a drug
and alcohol test before arriving at site - Testing will be done at an approved facility,
using approved methods - It is the responsibility of the contractor to
manage the testing, and to produce auditable
evidence of compliance
15Testing Method
16Rehabilitation
- Would we accept personnel onto the site who have
tested positive for drugs in the past but who
have subsequently successfully completed the
required counseling and return to work testing? - Yes, with approval. Our concern is sustained
fitness to work.
17Learning the business of DA testing

23What did we do?
- Began full lab testing to back up quick tests
- Found 4 anomalies
- One had 600 times the DOT limit of cocaine, and
was clear on the strip test - Parallel tested alternative kits
- Found one that reliably matched the lab tests
- Worked with our service provider to improve test
interpretation
24Positive industry directions
chrystal meth
25Testing
- Four or five panel?
- THC (MARIJUANA)
- COCAINE/BENZOYLECGONINE
- OPIATES/MORPHINE
- AMPHETAMINE
- METHAMPHETAMINE
26Methamphetamine
- About it
- Street names are chrystal meth, prairie fire,
speed, meth, chalk - clear chunky crystals resembling ice
- Taken orally or intranasally (snorting the
powder), by intravenous injection, and by smoking
- Highly addictive
- 12-24 hour high
- 15-30 a hit
27Work place risks
- Serious judgment impairment
- Reduced sense of risk, invincibility
- Paranoia, and aggressiveness
- Can substitute for days of sleep
28A growing concern
- In Alberta
- RCMP opened 212 files in 2002 five times the
number 5 years ago - In BC
- of clients looking for help with chrystal meth
addictions - 4 in 1999
- 11 in 2003 (Ministry of BC Health)
- AADACs Youth Experience Survey
- 5.3 of youths in Grades 7-12 say they have tried
ecstasy or crystal meth

we need to test for chrystal meth
30Positive industry directions
random testing
31Drug testing is a privilege
- We need to test for the right reasons
- ensure a safe and drug free work place
- We need to react to positive tests appropriately
- Due process
- Rehabilitation
- We need to make this a normal part of the work
32Random Drug Testing
- Presite access testing
- Testing for cause
- Post incident testing
Strengthens this area
33Testing for cause
- Uncomfortable
- Leadership and the individual
- Questionable detection ability
- The more of an problem the drugs are, the more
sophisticated the methods to conceal symptoms - It leaves a stigma
34Random drug testing addresses these barriers
35Summary
- Drug testing is an important part of our work
place safety programs - Our testing and detection needs to evolve with
the business - Chrystal meth is something we need to test for in
the work place - Random drug testing is a step forward for the
worker, and the workplace
