7
Questions?
8
Writing Interdisciplinary Cases
  • Cases provide a forum for you to discover
  • What you dont know
  • What you know
  • What you need to learn
  • A progressive disclosure format is used.
  • Good cases generate many learning issues.

9
Guidelines for Developing Interdisciplinary Cases
  • Several students from different disciplines will
form a case writing team to develop their case.
The same case writing team will facilitate their
    case.
  • Everyone should be involved in developing and
    facilitating at least one case.

10
More case guidelines
  • Incorporate issues from ALL disciplines.
  • Consider a range of issues
  • Economic issues, resources, health disparities
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Public policy and public health
  • Cultural considerations
  • Psychosocial needs
  • Family and community considerations

11
More Case Guidelines
  • Address the transition through different stages
    of care
  • Consider prevention, health promotion and health
    disparities
  • Consider community specific issues (resources,
    access to care, etc.)
  • Be as realistic as possible

12
Case Format
  • Cases should facilitate and promote team
    problem-solving and respect.
  • Use case questions to guide discussion, but avoid
    being too directive.
  • Be creative include exhibits, video, computer
    technology, fieldtrips, guest speakers etc.

13
Actually Writing the Case
  • Think about the whole case. Where do you want to
    start and end?
  • After sketching out the case, fill in the
    details.
  • Consider useful case questions.
  • Consider exhibits, demonstrations, fieldtrips
    etc.

14
Questions?
15
Facilitating Tutorials
  • Your job is to facilitate, not to teach
  • Encourage all students to interact with each
    other
  • Emphasize open-ended questions to promote
    discussion
  • Ask rather than tell
  • Be flexible with the discussion direction

16
More Facilitation Techniques
  • Be patient with silence!
  • Encourage everyone to push to the edge of their
    knowledge and develop learning issues.
  • Help your team to focus and summarize what they
    know and dont know.

17
Even More on Facilitating
  • Promote application/synthesis of information.
  • Help identify useful learning issues.
  • Lead the evaluation and feedback component at the
    end of the session.
  • Have fun, teach about your discipline, and learn
    about other approaches to healthcare.
