6
What is Global Awareness?
  • It is a desire to learn about and a willingness
to respect people from other cultures.
  • The understanding that everyone has a culture
which affects the way we view ourselves and the
    world.
  • Global Awareness is understanding cultures,
languages traditions other than your own.

7
Global Awareness No Easy Answers
  • It is important to understand that global issues
    are incredibly complex.
  • You cant expect everyone to perceive things the
    same way that you do.
  • Try to understand both sides of an issue.
  • Respect peoples right to disagree.

8
Why is global awareness important?
9
So Why Is Global Awareness Important?

  • Career Success
  • Help your community and nation stay competitive
  • Help solve the worlds problems

10
The End of an Era.The World is Catching Up
  • In 35 years the U.S. trade deficit has gone from
    0 to 800,000,000,000.
  • In the 21st Century, U.S. students will face
greater competition for jobs than at anytime in
    history.
  • U.S. students are less likely to speak a second
language or have traveled abroad.UNESCO, 2003

11
An Economic Imperative
  • Global Awareness and Cultural Competency are not
    just nice sounding, abstract concepts.
  • Globalized markets require a broader
    understanding of world issues.
  • Domestic issues of health, safety, economic
development and education, even at the local
level, are all impacted by world events.

12
The Need is Apparentfor College Admissions
  • After academics, some of the main factors that
can help students stand out and make themselves
more marketable in the eyes of colleges are
  • their ability to benefit from and contribute to a
    culturally and intellectually diverse community
    of scholar citizens
  • An understanding of and respect for intellectual,
    social, and cultural difference.Tino Johnson,
    Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions,
    UGA

13
The Need is Apparentfor Career Success
  • The ability to understand and work with others is

  • This is especially important in todays global
environment where companies, cultures and people
must move easily across cultural and political
borders. Andres Villegas, Vice President of
    International Trade, Marketing and Governmental
    Affairs, Langdale Industries.
