became The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St
Andrews - 1894 The St. Andrews Town Council reacquired the
links after the first Links Act was passed by
parliament safeguarding the links for public

9- 1993 Balgove, an extensive Golf Practice Centre
consisting of 9 holes opened - 1995 The first club house open to the public open
serving the Old, New, and Jubilee courses - 2000 The second public clubhouse opened serving
the Eden, Strathtyurm and Balgove Courses and
creating the largest public golf complex in the
world - Currently there is another 18 hole golf course in
the works

11- In 1754, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club was
founded under its original name of the Society of
St Andrews Golfers. This club, originally
composed of 22 noblemen, professors and
landowners, now governs the rules of golf
everywhere except the USA.

their annual tournament - 1806 The Club began playing for a Gold Medal

14- 1835 Major Hugh Lyon Playfair formed the Union
Club which consisted of many RA members - 1853 The Union club built the first Clubhouse at
St. Andrews - 1877 the two clubs merged eliminating the Union
Club name - Significant changes were made to the original
clubhouse in 1866, 1873, 1882, 1889, 1898 and
1924, and 2002

16- 1857 The Club hosted the first tournament in
which members of neighboring courses were invited
acting as a National Championship - 1859 The tournament was run again with less
interest - 1860 Prestwick Golf Club inaugurated the Open
Championship - 1872 The RA with Prestwick and the Honorable
Company of Edinburgh Golfers, jointly took over
responsibility for the running of the Open. They
were later joined by Royal St Georges, Royal
Liverpool and Royal Cinque Port s Golf Clubs.
17- 1894 With the passage of the Links act the RA
took over maintenance of the old and new courses
and were forced to appoint the first full time
paid secretary to handle the business of the
club, Colonel R. Elliot Lockhart - 1897 There was much speculation over rules of the
game and the RA set up a Rules committee to
handle this job. This came 3 years after the
USGA was formed in the United States. - 1909 the first rules pertaining to golf clubs
were written - 1920 the first rules pertaining to ball size were
written

19- 1930s The RA made a concerted effort to consult
golfing bodies at home and abroad over changes to
the Rules of Golf and those of Amateur Status. - 1951 The RA held a conference with the USGA to
seek uniformity between the two governing bodies
over the Rules of Golf. - 1970 The Club held its first conference with
golfing bodies from around the world to discuss
issues relating to the governance of the game. - 2004 The RA celebrated its 250th anniversary

world's great sporting events and an outstanding
commercial success, The RA is able to invest an
annual surplus through The RA Foundation into
grass roots development projects around the
world. - Particular emphasis is placed on the
encouragement of junior golf, on the development
of the game in emerging golfing nations, on
coaching and the provision of open-to-all courses
and practice facilities. - The RA also provides best practice guidance on
all aspects of golf course management, with
specific reference to ecological and conservation
issues, to help the growth of the game in a
commercially and environmentally sustainable way.
