• Compression forces result when the load is
  pushing on the bridge.

• Tension forces result when the load is pulling on
  the bridge.

• Load is the weight or mass the bridges carries.

• Live load is all of the objects crossing the
  bridge.

• Dead load is only the weight of the bridge by
  itself.

The 4 types of bridges

• 1. Arch- the load is supported by the arch.

• 2. Cantilever- load is supported by structures on
  the sides of the bridge.

• 3. Suspension- the load is supported by cables

• 4. Truss- short sections called trusses support
  the load.

Triangles

• Triangles are very light and strong and are often
  used in bridge construction.

The Tacoma-Narrows Bridge

• Washington state
• was a suspension bridge made of solid girders
  that caught the wind and acted like a sail.
