Biography of Benito Mussolini.
  • He was the son of a socialist blacksmith and a
    religious school teacher.
  • He organized veterans and other discontented
    Italian workers into the fascist party.

Mussolini In Power!!
  • He organized his own combat squad, uniform in
    black shirts.
  • The combat squad smashed opposition businesses,
    broke up rallies, and attacked farmers unions
    and cooperatives.

  • They rejected the democratic process in favor of
    violent action.
  • The black shirts also ousted elected officials in
    northern Italy.

  • Constantly bombarded with slogans men, women and
    children glorified the state and Mussolini
    written on their slogans Obey! Believe! and
    Fight!
  • Young children were taught much of their glorious
    roman heritage and to obey strict military
    discipline.

The Fascists.
  • In the year of 1922 the fascists were persistent
    in getting power.
  • In a group of thousands they marched on Rome,
    causing King Victor Emmanuel III to bow to the
    pressure and ask Mussolini to become prime
    minister fearing a civil war.
  • Without fighting back Mussolini received great
    respect from the king by obtaining a legal
    appointment to form a new government.

  • He was a very dynamic and fiery speaker.
  • He promised to end corruption and replace the
    turmoil with order.

Expanding Power.
  • Mussolini was not satisfied with a coalition
    government. He aimed to be the ruler of one-party
    totalitarian state. From 1922 to 1929, slowly but
    gradually, he destroyed all effective opposition
    at home.
  • From, 1922 to 1923, Mussolini steadily built up
    his own power in the government. He placed loyal
    Fascists in key government positions, created the
    Voluntary Fascist Militia for National Security,
    and promoted the Grand Council of Fascism (the
    highest authority of the Fascist Party) into an
    organ of state.
